It’s time for the North American hard-court swing. The grass-court season has ended after Wimbledon, which saw Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner become champions in their respective categories.

These players, however, will not be featuring at the Citi Open. They will instead kick-start their campaigns on the North American hard-court swing at the Canadian Open, which starts on July 27th.

At the Citi Open, defending champions Sebastian Korda and Paula Badosa will not be playing. Last year’s men’s US Open finalists, Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz, are the first seeds in their respective categories.

Citi Open doesn’t offer equal prize money to men’s and women’s participants. The total prize pool for the men’s and women’s events is $2,396,115 and $1,282,951, respectively. The men’s champion will pocket $420,525, while the women’s one will get $197,570.

Andre Agassi has won the most titles (five). Venus Williams has accepted a wild card for the event. She will be playing her first match in 16 months. The last time the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion was seen in action was in the 2024 Miami Open.

The Citi Open is the only combined men’s and women’s event of the 500 category this year. Jessica Pegula will be aiming to win the tournament for the third time in her career following the 2019 and 2021 seasons.

She will also be bidding to reach her sixth finals and win her fourth title, following her victories at the ATX Open, Charleston Open, and the Bad Homburg Open. Apart from the World No.4, the other seeded American players in the women’s event are Emma Navarro and Sofia Kenin. Elena Rybakina will be chasing her second title of the season in the event, following her win at the Internationaux de Strasbourg, which she lifted by beating Liudmila Samsonova.

Last year, Paula Badosa and Sebastian Korda lifted Marie Bouzkova and Flavio Cobolli, respectively, to win the Citi Open. Apart from Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev, Lorenzo Musetti, Frances Tiafoe, Andrey Rublev, and Ben Shelton, too, will aim to kick-start their campaign on the American continent on the right note.

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, hasn’t yet lifted a title since the 2023 Italian Open. Since lifting his career’s first clay-court trophy, the Russian has played six finals, losing all. This year, he reached the summit clash of the Halle Open but couldn’t cross the final hurdle in the form of Alexander Bublik. Medvedev was the finalist in Washington in 2019, losing the match to Nick Kyrgios.
