Andrey Rublev vs Andy Murray: Preview
Andrey Rublev had an amazing 2021 season. He won the ATP Cup with Russia before making it to the quarterfinal of Australian Open. He then won the ATP 500 event at Rotterdam and made it to the semifinals at Doha, Dubai and Miami. After that, he had a decent run in almost every tournament and ended the season with a Davis Cup victory for Russia. In Abu Dhabi, he defeated Denis Shapovalov in three sets 7-6(5),3-6,6-4 to reach the final.
As for Andy Murray, he is gaining his long lost form. He has played consistently on tour since the last 4 months and has done reasonably well. He had a good run at Wimbledon and pushed third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas to five sets in the first round at US Open.
He then also reached the quarterfinal at Metz and defeated Carlos Alcaraz to make it to the third round of Indian Wells Masters. He ended his season with a quarterfinal outing at Stockholm. This week in Abu Dhabi, he defeated Dan Evans a day ago and then got the better of old rival Rafael Nadal in straight sets 6-3,7-5.
Andrey Rublev vs Andy Murray: Head-to-Head
Rublev and Murray have met twice previously. The H2H stands deadlock at 1-1. They last met at Rotterdam earlier this year where the Russian won in straight sets.
Andrey Rublev vs Andy Murray: Prediction
Despite the vast difference in rankings, the match will be a closely fought one. Rublev will have the advantage on paper but given Murray’s recent run, he will be a force to reckon with. The Brit hasn’t dropped a set this week and hence will fancy his chances to win the title. Rublev’s offense will be the deciding factor and Murray looks defensively solid this week to beat Rublev. Expect him to beat the Russian.
Prediction: Murray to win in three sets.
