Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson was recently released by WWE. Unfortunately, he couldn’t replicate the success he accomplished outside the professional wrestling promotion and parted ways after only one televised match. Now, amidst a lot of rumors, his agent has shared some interesting details about the 23-year-old’s future.
Gable Steveson was supposed to join Ariel Helwani on MMA Hour, but he was unable to do so due to some conflicts. However, his manager Dave Martin sent a message to him regarding the Olympic Gold medalist’s future. First of all, he thanked the WWE Universe for supporting him and everybody who helped him reach that position. Furthermore, the 23-year-old star also revealed that he has been training for MMA at Kill Cliff FC.
The statement revealed that the Olympic gold medalist would continue to strive to compete at the elite level, as multiple NFL teams have approached him. The management concluded the statement by indicating that Steveson would soon share big news with fans. Speaking about his WWE run, it didn’t go as he would have wanted, as the crowd didn’t get behind him. After not receiving many opportunities, WWE removed him from the NXT roster, eventually leading to his release.
Most fans say he succumbed to pressure from constant comparisons to another Olympic gold medalist and WWE legend, Kurt Angle. Steveson had only one televised match against Baron Corbin at The Great American Bash a year ago, which received huge backlash. All in all, it will be interesting to see whether he finds success in his new venture or if he will have to suffer the same fate as in WWE.
A lookback at Gable Steveson’s career in WWE
After winning a gold medal at the Olympics, Gable Steveson expressed his desire to be a part of WWE. He briefly appeared at the SummerSlam PLE in 2021. WWE soon announced that he had signed a contract with the company. Thus, he became just the second Olympic gold medalist to sign for the company after Angle.
In the 2021 WWE Draft, he was assigned to the Raw brand, but he made his first appearance as a WWE Superstar at WrestleMania 38. The 23-year-old star got into a heated argument with Chad Gable and delivered a devastating suplex, much to the joy of fans. In 2023, Steveson quietly moved to the NXT roster.
At The Great American Bash, he wrestled in his first and only televised match against The Lone Wolf, which ended in a no-contest. However, the reaction he received from fans was very negative. After months of absence, the Stamford-based company finally released him on May 3, along with several other NXT superstars.
