ISL: Mumbai show their dominance over Odisha as they score 6 goals in last night’s fixture
Mumbai City FC thrash bottom-placed Odisha 6-1 in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Wednesday despite conceding an early goal in the first 9 minutes. Jerry Mawihmingthanga was fouled inside the ‘D’ earning Odisha a penalty. The lead was short-lived as Mumbai City FC’s number 10, Bartholomew Ogbeche converted the set-piece to head the ball into the opponent’s net.
It was a Mumbai show after that. Odisha conceded 4 goals in the first half itself with Ogbeche scoring another towering header. Mumbai City have scored the most goals from set-pieces in the entire league and they have their eyes on to overtake table toppers Mohun Bagan A.C.
Bipin Singh the hattrick hero
It was a wonderful display of skill from the 25-year-old and it was his first hattrick for Mumbai this season. His first two goals came in the 38th and 47th minutes. It seemed like he wouldn’t get his last goal after a few vain efforts. The penalty awarded to Mumbai was also given to Ahmed Jahouh rather than to Singh who could instead complete his hattrick. Unlucky as neither did Jahouh convert the penalty nor did Bipin get his hattrick. Finally, Bipin got his much-deserved goal in the 86th minute to seal the game for Mumbai.
Mumbai City FC coach Sergio Lobera: “Obviously this is the most important moment in the season. We needed to react and it’s not only about the result but also how the team played and took out the three points. I am very happy because it’s going to be a very good game against ATK Mohun Bagan. I think we deserve to fight till the end. We deserve the victory and to play the last league game like a final.”
Another scorer on the sheet was Cy Goddard in the 44th minute scoring with his left boot a superb strike inside the box. City face Mohun Bagan on Sunday which will decide who remains on top of the table.
