Former WWE star Mustafa Ali was released by WWE earlier this year. He was an extremely talented star, whose release drew a lot of criticism towards WWE. Recently, the 38-year-old star talked about his time in WWE while discussing some interesting backstage stories. He revealed that his exit from the company was a surprisingly expected turn of events.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Mustafa Ali revealed that his departure from WWE had been a long time coming. He had expected his exit for the past year, but the timing still caught him off guard. Ali disclosed that WWE had plans to put the North American title on his shoulder. However, he was unexpectedly released from the company before those plans could come to fruition.

Not surprised that it happened. Surprised when it did happen? Yeah. I think I was in NXT at the time, and I actually had a pay-per-view match scheduled that weekend with Dominik Mysterio for the North American Championship.

Moreover, Mustafa Ali revealed that during that time, The Judgment Day and Dominik Mysterio were extremely popular. As a result, WWE aimed to solidify its deal with the CW Network by positioning Mysterio and the faction as the prominent faces of NXT. Consequently, the company chose to place the title on Mysterio’s shoulders instead of his in 2023.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see where the future goes for the 38-year-old star from here on.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Ali stated that his success is entirely in his hands and depends on how high he manages to take his name. He acknowledged that WWE is in a strong position, with a wealth of superstars on the roster, meaning the company does not need him as much as he needs them. As a result, if he wants to make his return to WWE a reality, he will need to work hard and grind to prove his worth.

Business is so good for them, I do think there is a pathway back there. There’s good relations, there’s good contact there. Even the release was like very nice, a lot of nice messages were sent. At the end of the day, it’s on me, right?
