This past NBA regular season, the MVP race quickly narrowed to a two-man battle between Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic and Oklahoma City Thunder standout Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. While Jokic was aiming for his fourth MVP, it was Gilgeous-Alexander who ultimately took home the 2024–25 award. The Canadian guard’s win was met with widespread praise, marking a well-earned milestone in his rising career.
Winning the MVP award is no ordinary feat as it showcases that the winner is consistently performing throughout the 82 games played in the entirety of the season. SGA did just that for his side in the 2024-25 NBA season, and claimed the votes over three-time MVP winner Jokic. With this feat, SGA now has a monstrous contract deal cut out for him.
Next summer, the 26-year-old will have the opportunity to sign a five-year, $380 million agreement. If Shai Gilgeous-Alexander signs that huge contract in the upcoming summer, he might make $76 million annually. Given that this contract will effectively pay him $1 million per game, he will be well off for the rest of his life.
Shai is eligible to sign a 5-year, $380M extension next offseason with OKC or sign a 4-year, $293M extension this offseason 💰

Notably, SGA was over the moon with his recent feat of winning MVP. So much so that he gifted his teammates exclusive Rolex watches. Deservingly so, his teammates have been the main reason the Thunder star was able to win this award in the first place. They deserve all the perks coming their way, as they have supported SGA through thick and thin.

The Canadian celebrity decided to express his gratitude to them for their support. After choosing several models from the high-end watchmaker, the group assembled to display their new purchases. The Oklahoma City Thunder are as cohesive as any team, as many have noted. In tomorrow’s Game 2, they will have to rely on that cohesiveness.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shows love to wife in a teary message after winning the MVP award
Once the SGA acknowledged his fellow teammates, support staff, executives, family, and friends, he turned his attention to the woman he married in February 2024. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recognized his wife, Hailey Summers, during his MVP award speech on Wednesday night. In addition, the Thunder star broke down in tears, making it a wholesome moment for his fans.
Thank you so much. Thank you for everything you are — for me, for our son, Ares. You were the first person to show me what love really meant … what sacrifice really meant. And I can’t wait to spend the rest of this journey called life with you. Thank you very much. I wouldn’t be the man I am, I wouldn’t be the player I am, I wouldn’t be the father I am, without you. Thank you.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said
"Sorry I'm so dramatic. … You were the first person to show me what love really meant."

The event brought back memories of the 2014 statement by former Thunder player Kevin Durant, in which he tearfully referred to his mother, Wanda Durant, as “the real MVP.” When he thanked his teammates, Gilgeous-Alexander kept his composure and spoke without notes. These messages were coming directly from the heart of the Thunder star man.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joins elite Canadian company for the MVP award
Canada has a new king of the court—20 years after Steve Nash’s reign. Hamilton native Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has become the only other Canadian to win the NBA MVP, joining Hall of Famer Nash, the Victoria, B.C. legend. Previously, the two were the only Canadians ever named to an All-NBA team, but now Gilgeous-Alexander has officially matched his idol’s greatest individual feat.

Nash was selected to the first team three times, while Gilgeous-Alexander will soon be placed on the second and third teams twice each. Now, SGA has entered the elite list alongside Nash for the MVP award as well, sending a moment of pride to all his fellow Canadians.
The voting panel awarded Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 71 first-place votes and a total of 913 points. Nikola Jokic received the remaining 29 first-place votes, finishing with 787 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo earned 470 points, without receiving a single first- or second-place vote.
