The Cleveland Browns are creating history once more. The team has handed out yet another monstrous contract but this time, to a deserving player. Star defensive end Myles Garrett has agreed to stay in Cleveland for a generous sum of $40 million per year as per Adam Schefter of ESPN. With this new deal, the team has effectively changed his name to Myles ‘Money’ Garrett.
This comes a few weeks after Myles Garrett expressed his intention to leave Cleveland in search of greener pastures. The former Defensive Player of the Year cited his yearning to win a Super Bowl and be a part of a winning franchise as the reason for seeking a trade.
The contract extension was surprising because Garrett seemed convinced to leave Cleveland. Tensions flared in recent days as owner Jimmy Haslam denied him a meeting. However, everything has a price and the Browns understood that it would take nothing less than offering a historic deal to keep Garrett around. The new contract makes Myles Garrett the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL today.

Myles Garrett will remain in Cleveland through the 2030 season
Apart from his $40 million per year salary, he will receive $123 million guaranteed. He will receive $100 million in cash over the first three years of the deal. This means the defensive end will spend the remainder of his prime with the Browns and based on the franchise’s recent records, will not be in a position to compete for a Super Bowl.

With two of their players, Deshaun Watson and Myles Garrett locked in under big contracts, the Browns have little to no room for adding more stars to improve their franchise. The team will rely on the draft to add fresh talent.
It was essential for them to retain Garrett because he has been the one silver lining about the organization that encouraged fans to continue buying tickets. Through thick and thin, he has remained consistent, and to lose him would be nothing short of a nightmare for the team.
Garrett is coming off a 14.0 sack season and his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl appearance. Before signing this deal, he had two more years left on his contract. This makes the duration of the contract six years and the total value is around $204,796,125. Apart from this, the contract has a no-trade clause which is obvious considering his importance to the team.
