A few days ago, the 2023 DPOY Myles Garrett broke several headlines with a shocking contract extension with the Cleveland Browns. Garrett, who admitted to looking for newer bases, committed his future to the Browns, signing a four-year contract extension worth an average of $40 million per season.

The deal made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. With $122.8 million guaranteed and a total value of $204.8 million, the Browns ensured their defensive leader remains in Cleveland.

Garrett’s decision to stay comes after a turbulent offseason where he initially requested a trade. Frustrated by the Browns’ disappointing 3-14 season, the four-time All-Pro edge rusher voiced concerns about the team’s direction. However, the Browns were adamant about keeping him and refused to entertain offers from other teams.

Ultimately, discussions between Garrett and Browns general manager Andrew Berry led to an agreement. The defensive star acknowledged that his frustration sparked meaningful conversations that helped strengthen relationships within the organization.

I think I had some frustration. And, you know, I feel like that helped us grow and have conversations that were difficult but needed to be had. I think the fans will see that my heart is in the right place. It has never been about money. It’s always been about winning.

Since being drafted first overall in 2017, Myles Garrett has been a dominant force on the field. He has recorded 102.5 career sacks, including 14 in the 2024 season. However, despite his elite performance, the Browns have only reached the playoffs twice during his tenure. The Cleveland Browns have been long troubled with quarterback issues, having tested fourteen different options in the last seven seasons.

The new deal places additional expectations on Garrett, not just as a player but also as a leader. Many believe he will play a crucial role in recruiting free agents to Cleveland. On Thursday, he was at the Browns’ complex to meet quarterback Russell Wilson, whom he had previously spoken to about joining the team.

Myles Garrett also admitted to prove that his main motivation in joining the Browns will be through his performances, leadership, and most importantly, a genuine hunger to win. Garrett knows some fans believe his decision was motivated by money rather than a desire to win or passion for football.

If it’s about the money, then I can just pack it in and not give my best effort. But I plan to be the best person possible in this locker room, be the best leader possible, and dominate on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays. Giving everything for those wins and what I’ve done year in and year out—that really proves it to the fans.

Myles Garrett admitted in his speech

The Cleveland Browns are in the hunt for their new quarterback in free agency and the upcoming draft. Although, the options are dwindling day-by-day, the Browns are looking like that they need to be sure about their new option before striking a deal.
