Myles Garrett‘s record-setting day was overshadowed by the Cleveland Browns’ 13-32 defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots. The usually cool pass rusher finally snapped at his team’s constant inability to win games.

On an individual level, Garrett has been nothing short of remarkable. Ahead of the Patriots game on Sunday, he had accumulated 25 tackles, five sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, and 15 pressures in seven outings. So, he was due for another big game in Week 8.

Despite entering Foxborough as underdogs, where the Browns haven’t won since 1992, Garrett and Co. were optimistic about carving out a positive result as they were coming off a 31-6 win against the Miami Dolphins the previous week.

Garrett kept his end of the bargain by sacking Patriots quarterback Drake Maye 5 times. Additionally, he had 12 total tackles (6 solo and 6 assisted).

The Browns’ offense, led by rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, could not hold a candle against the Patriots’ defense. Gabriel threw two touchdowns but also turned the ball over twice. Moreover, the run game was nonexistent. Rookie rusher Quinshon Judkins, who has been phenomenal since joining the roster, only had 19 yards from 9 carries on the night.

The cumulative failures of his teammates set off Garrett. Cameras caught the All-Pro edge rusher smashing his helmet inside the Browns’ dugout in anger.

Myles Garrett created history despite the Browns’ succumbing to their sixth defeat of the season

Going into the Patriots game, Garrett had 107.5 sacks since joining the NFL in 2017. Midway through the first quarter, on third and goal, he sacked Maye for the first time in the fixture.

That sack improved his tally to 108.5. It was enough to surpass Hall of Famer Reggie White (108) for the most sacks before turning 30 years old.

As [Myles] Garrett beat the Patriots on the edge early in the first quarter, he zeroed in on QB Drake Maye to take him down for the sack. That sack set an NFL record for the most sacks by a player under the age of 30. Garrett surpassed Reggie White, who had 108 sacks, and set the record with 108.5 sacks.

Browns beat writer Kelsey Russo wrote (H/T: Browns official transcript)

Garrett has 8 more games before turning 30 on December 29 to pull ahead of the rest of the pack. The only active player who is near his tally is Pittsburgh Steelers’ TJ Watt.

Personal achievements are fine and all, but it matters little if the team doesn’t know how to win games. Since Joe Flacco‘s expulsion, the Browns have only won one game with Gabriel as the shot caller.

I would throw the whole [5 sack] performance away for the win.

Myles Garrett said afterward

Garrett wanted out of Cleveland in the offseason. He requested a trade and went around promoting himself on various podcasts and sports talk shows.

However, he made a complete 180 by signing a four-year, $160 million extension on March 9, with $123.5 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $40 million.

I think the fans will see my heart is in the right place. It’s never been about money. It’s always been about winning.

Garrett said after signing the contract

The Browns fans can’t doubt his loyalty or his production on the field. But a defensive player can only do so much. Unless his teammates figure out ways to win games, the franchise will remain in eternal purgatory.
