N. Srinivasan has announced his return to cricket administration, by taking over the role of chairman at five-time IPL winning franchise, Chennai Super Kings. He returns to the helm after having remained out of a major role within the franchise following the 2013 spot-fixing controversy.

From 2011 to 2013, N. Srinivasan had served as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), succeeding Jagmohan Dalmiya, following which he took over another major responsibility in the International Cricket Council. From 2014 to 2015, Srinivasan served as the first chairman of the ICC, while also holding the leadership of the Tamil Nadu State Cricket Association all the while.

However, several controversies, including the IPL spot-fixing scandal involving his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, forced Srinivasan to step away. At 80 years old, he has decided to return to cricket, this time taking over as chairman of his beloved franchise, Chennai Super Kings. He was the founder of India Cements, which owns CSK. He still holds a major stake in the franchise, even after the company was acquired by Ultratech Cement in 2024.

N. Srinivisan’s daughter Rupa Gurunath will also be holding a major position in the team’s administration ahead of the 2026 IPL season, having been appointed to the role of ‘Whole-Time Director’ last month. While it is expected that Srinivas’ daughter Rupa would take a keen interest in the day-to-day operations of the franchise, the 80-year-old would hold more of an advisory role due to travel and health restrictions.

Srinivasan’s return to helm at CSK was described by CEO Kasi Viswanathan as a ‘boon’. The development also comes at a time when the franchise has struggled to replicate its past domination. Chennai has only made it to the playoffs in two out of six seasons, a sharp contrast to the period between 2008 and 2015, when they qualified every time. With his return, N. Srinivasan will aim to lead a major revival for the joint-most successful IPL franchise. He told PTI:

See, it’s a great boon for CSK. He’s [N. Srinivasan] been the best administrator for us… He’ll be in an advisory role only because he doesn’t travel much.

Furthermore, it is also speculated that N. Srinivasan might be able to persuade former captain MS Dhoni to continue for another IPL season. Srinivasan will also take on the role of CSK Cricket Limited (CSKCL) director, putting him in charge of the team’s foreign ventures in the SA20 and the MLC.

With N. Srinivasan Back at the Helm of Affairs, What Could CSK’s Squad Look Like Next Season?

Chennai Super Kings will be aiming to rebuild itself and bounce back from the setbacks of the 2025 season. CSK finished at the bottom of the standing after the end of the 2025 season, which marked the five-time IPL-winning franchise’s worst-ever record in the competition.

The Men in Yellow will definitely be boosted by the return of former chief N. Srinivisan, who is known to be one of the most brilliant minds in cricket administration. While R Ashwin’s departure has opened up a spot as well as freed up INR 9.75 crores, after he announced his retirement from the IPL, CSK might also look to release several other out-of-form players like Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar and Deepak Hooda

Furthermore, overseas stars including Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Sam Curran also find their position at risk. Three of CSK’s replacement signings in 2025, Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis and Urvil Patel, might play a key role in the side, while Ruturaj Gaikwad’s return is also expected to provide a boost. It is however uncertain whether team icon MS Dhoni will continue his journey into the 2026 season.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that CSK might be interested in a transfer swap deal for Rajasthan Royals captain and Team India opener Sanju Samson. Samson’s potential arrival could help the team reorganize, while also bringing in an excellent wicket-keeper batter who could serve as a successor to Dhoni.
