Former British player Naomi Broady has stated that Rafael Nadal has already planned his retirement but has chosen to keep his cards close to his chest on the issue. The Spaniard has barely featured on the ATP tour in the last few months thanks to a series of injuries.
Nadal was last seen in action at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he took part in both the singles and men’s doubles. In the former, he made a second-round exit after losing to Novak Djokovic. In the latter, he partnered with Carlos Alcaraz and reached the quarterfinals, where the pair lost to the fourth-seeded Americans Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.
Broady, a two-time Wimbledon mixed-doubles quarterfinalist, has opined that Nadal has made plans for his retirement. She also suggested that the ideal way for him to call time on his career would be at the Laver Cup later this year.
Nadal clearly has a plan in his head but he's keeping his cards close to his chest. As we saw with Andy [Murray] these guys will only - and rightly so - step away when they feel completely ready. Whether he chooses to do it at the Laver Cup like Roger Federer did and able to have that really incredible celebration fitting for his career, that would be incredible.Naomi Broady said (via Sky Sports)
Roger Federer retired at the 2022 Laver Cup, with his final professional match being a doubles contest alongside Nadal. The pair lost to Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.
Noami Broady says many expected Rafael Nadal to retire at the Paris Olympics
Rafael Nadal has won two Olympic goal medals in his career. He won the singles title at the 2008 Beijing Games and the doubles crown partnering Marc Lopez at the 2016 Rio Games. With the tennis tournament at this year’s Paris Olympics taking place at Roland Garros, where Nadal has won a record 14 French Open titles, many expected him to announce his retirement at the event.
Nadal failed to win another Olympic medal and later refused to give any insights into his future. Like many, Naomi Brady expected the 38-year-old to announce a decision about his future at the Olympics.
I think Rafa still really enjoys his tennis. They all just love the sport so much and if he can keep going then I think he would like to, which is why I think he didn't announce his farewell at Roland Garros. I think a lot of people thought he would have chosen to have that sort of celebration at the Olympics - at Roland Garros on Philippe-Chatrier - and playing for his country, but who knows? We just don't know.Naomi Broady said (via Sky Sports)
Nadal recently announced that he will not be taking part in the US Open this year. He also confirmed that his next on-court appearance will be at the Laver Cup in Berlin.
