Naomi Osaka has slammed critics of her 2026 Australian Open outfit with a cheeky fashion remark ahead of the tournament’s kick-off on January 18. The former World No.1 is known for her bold outfit choices and innovative designs at major events. Throughout 2025, she wore stylish kits on the court, which were designed by her under the Nike brand.
Osaka has impressed fans with her personalized attire in major tournaments in the past few years. She not only showcases her rich Japanese culture, but also adds her favorite color and themes to her ensembles. Last year, at the Australian Open, she wore a black tank and a gray patterned skirt filled with sunflowers.
The kit showcased what the event means to her. She also wore sunflower earrings, hair clips, and a custom shoe, which had a positive message written on it. At the US Open, she often carried a plush Labubu toy that matched her outfit and gave names to each of the Labubu until the semi-finals.
She crashed out of the event in the semi-finals after losing to Amanda Anisimova in three sets. It was her best run in a Grand Slam tournament since returning from maternity leave in 2024. The former World No.1 aims to continue with the trend of wearing beautiful, stylish kits at the Grand Slam event in Melbourne.
To start the 2026 season, Osaka opted to play at the United Cup after skipping the Adelaide International and the Brisbane International this season. The United Cup will serve as her warm-up tournament ahead of the Australian Open.

However, her kit for the first Grand Slam of the season was released by Nike and got some negative reactions from fans on social media. Osaka then replied to them with a cheeky fashion statement on Threads:
If you’re uncultured, you’re not going to understand my tennis outfits. The girls that get it, get it lol.

Osaka failed to win a tour-level title last season but showed a glimpse of her former self in the second half of 2025. She reached the final of the Canadian Open before losing to home favorite Victoria Mboko in three sets. At the US Open, she defeated former World No.2 Coco Gauff in the round of 16 before reaching the semi-finals. Her performances helped her secure a place in the top 20 of the WTA rankings.
Naomi Osaka helps Japan claim its maiden United Cup win in Perth
Naomi Osaka helped Japan clinch their first win at the recently concluded United Cup in Perth, Australia. The former World No.1 defeated Great Britain’s Katie Swan 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the opening tie of their second group stage match. She needed just an hour and 53 minutes to beat the British star, who replaced the injured Emma Raducanu.

Japan’s success at the tournament came after Britain’s Billy Harris fell to Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki in the second match of the Group E United Cup tie. With a 2-0 advantage for Japan, they went into the doubles match without much urgency, which led to them losing to Britain’s Olivia Nicholls and Neal Skupski.
Japan secured a 2-1 win over Great Britain, but didn’t progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament. They had suffered a heavy demolition in the opening match against Greece, with Maria Sakkari beating Osaka in straight sets in the women’s singles match. Japan lost to the Greek team 0-3.
The 2026 United Cup was Japan’s maiden appearance at the event, and despite exiting early, they will be happy to get at least one victory, which will be a good boost ahead of next season’s edition. Meanwhile, Osaka will be hoping to use the confidence she gained at the United Cup in the Australian Open in Melbourne.
