Former World No.1 Naomi Osaka made a triumphant return to the US Open, defeating 10th seed Jeļena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round. It was the Japanese superstar’s finest performance since her return to the tour this year.
However, it wasn’t just Osaka’s performance that caught everyone’s attention; it was her outfit as well. The two-time former US Open champion was seen in a green Nike outfit, which she considered the best of her career.
Osaka went through the match unbroken, giving away only two break points in total. In the first set, she made history by going through the entire set without committing an unforced error.
On the other hand, Ostapenko remains the second-biggest seed to fall at the US Open this year, following Maria Sakkari. The ninth seed withdrew from her match yesterday after losing the first set due to a shoulder injury.
Tennis fans blast Naomi Osaka’s dressing sense at the US Open
As soon as Naomi Osaka entered the court, her green outfit dominated the tennis headlines. Although many admired her dress, a majority of others gave negative feedback on it. Here are some of the reactions:
Osaka has joined the ranks of tennis players who have tried to blend their tennis and fashion careers. Former World No.1 Maria Sharapova was known for her fashion sense and had a significant influence on the design of her Grand Slam outfits.
Serena Williams wasn’t heavily involved in fashion during her prime years in tennis. However, she is often seen in the fashion world today after her retirement. Considering that Osaka has also started developing a fashion sense in some shape or form, it’s clear that she could have a future in this field after her retirement. However, for now, she’s an active tennis player and looks hungry to compete for big titles.
