Former World No.1 Naomi Osaka had her best moment on the court after her return to the tennis tour in 2024, losing to World No.1 Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-5 in the second round. The Japanese star returned to the tour this year after a hiatus due to pregnancy last year.
After struggling on the hard courts, surprisingly where she has had her best results previously, no one gave her any hope during the clay season. However, she started picking up form at the Italian Open, where she beat a top 10 player for the first time in almost 12 months by defeating 10th seed Daria Kasatkina in the Round of 32.

However, nothing compares to what she did on the Philippe Chatrier Court three days ago. Osaka had a bad start against Swiatek, going down a break early. However, not only did she recover the break, but she also stood at set point in the 10th game of the first set. Swiatek, showing why she is the best female player in the world, weathered the storm and cleaned up her game in the tiebreak.
In the second set, the tennis world saw the Osaka of 2019. The four-time Grand Slam champion was relentless from the baseline, blasting winners from the back of the court to leave Swiatek helpless. She comfortably closed the second set 6-1.
Osaka appeared to have carried that momentum into the third set when she had a match point at 5-3. However, the World No.1 had other ideas, as the Pole won the last five games to inflict a devastating defeat on Osaka. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the former World No.1 is optimistic about what lies ahead in the grass court season, especially during the North American tour.
Naomi Osaka’s cryptic tweet throws tennis Twitter in an emotional frenzy
Three days after the marathon match against Iga Swiatek, it feels like Naomi Osaka is still not over her most devastating loss since her return to tennis. The former World No.1 shared a meme on X, which indicated that she missed competing at Roland Garros and would have loved to see the marathon match with the Polish star go her way.

Her post on X generated many reactions from tennis fans. Check out some reactions here:
Under the retractable roof of the Phillpe Chatrier court, Swiatek, a three-time champion in Paris, narrowly defeated Osaka in a tense second-round match. She has recovered well from this banana skin as she beat Marie Bouzková in the next round and is now in the Round of 16.
This victory extended Swiatek’s winning streak at Roland Garros to 16 matches as she aims for her third consecutive title in Paris. For Osaka, the tough loss demonstrated that she remains a formidable player on the court.
Their intense and unpredictable match might be the highlight of the tournament so far. French Open organisers might regret not scheduling it for the prime-time evening slot, which was again given to the men’s draw. Former World No.1 Andy Murray suggested that the WTA should promote such outstanding matches more effectively.
