In Short
  • Naomi Osaka plans a dramatic entrance at Roland Garros, following her bold outfit at the Australian Open.
  • She will face Laura Siegemund in the first round of the French Open, aiming to improve her past performance at the event.
  • Osaka has not progressed beyond the third round at Roland Garros since 2019 and has yet to win a title on clay or grass.

Naomi Osaka turned heads with her bold jellyfish-inspired outfit at the Australian Open. Osaka has planned another show-stopping entrance, this time at Roland Garros.

In the first round of the French Open, the four-time Grand Slam champion will lock horns with Laura Siegemund. Before her match at Roland Garros, the tennis world, for sure, will be waiting for another grand entrance now that Osaka, in the pre-tournament press conference, hinted at the same.

I feel like fashion for me, I tell people I don’t talk a lot, so that way I can talk through my clothes, and that means I can be as loud with colors or patterns or fabric as I want. I definitely would say I’m doing something here, too. But I think that’s the fun part. I feel like we lost that a little in tennis.

Earlier this month, Osaka attended the Met Gala, wearing a custom two-piece set from couturier Robert Wun. Osaka’s jaw-dropping outfit at Melbourne Slam was a result of her collaboration with Wun and Nike.

I always tell people I grew up with Serena [Williams] and Venus’ [Williams] grand reveals. I literally can look at a picture and probably tell you what year that outfit came from. I know there’s some kids or some people that are similar to me that hopefully feel that same way about my outfits. But yeah, I am a little dramatic when it comes to my fashion sense.

Osaka has never progressed beyond the third round of the French Open. She, in fact, has made the third round thrice and hasn’t reached the stage since 2019. Last year, she suffered an opening-round exit, losing in three sets to Paula Badosa. She has yet to win a title since the 2021 Australian Open.

Naomi Osaka on her matches on clay this year

Naomi Osaka is a winner of seven singles titles, none of which she won on clay or grass. The Japanese ace felt she had a chance to defeat Aryna Sabalenka when they met in the fourth round of the Madrid Open because she took the first set off the Belarusian ace before losing with a 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2 scoreline.

But her defeat in the fourth round of the Italian Open affected her confidence a bit, given that she was dismantled by four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-1, and this helped the Pole improve her head-to-head record to 3-1. In the pre-tournament press conference in Rome, Osaka said it’s hard for her to judge her performance on clay this season.

Then we went into Rome… I thought I played my first two matches really well, and then Iga said, ‘Hell, no!’ She slapped me in the ground. That was a little crazy. Honestly, that blew my confidence a lot, but I just had to step away, knowing that she’s the best clay court player, and I still have a lot to learn.

It was Osaka who nearly knocked out Swiatek in the second round of the 2024 Roland Garros. The emotional toil got the better of the 24-year-old, as she was seen crying after the win. Swiatek later reached the final and breezed past Jasmine Paolini, winning her third consecutive title in the clay-court Major, but since then, she has not yet reached another final on clay.

The six-time Grand Slam champion, who lifted last year’s Wimbledon, will be up against Emerson Jones in the first round of the French Open. Last year in the tournament, her run ended with a three-set defeat at the hands of Sabalenka, who also handed her a bagel in the third set.
