Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka is having a hard time handling online trolls. Although the four-time Grand Slam champion recently shut down one for calling her a fluke, Osaka says she is still learning how to handle the negativity. The Japanese ace said she tries to stay away and is less involved in social media now.

However, with it impossible to completely avoid (due to sponsorship commitments), Osaka is learning how to deal with the negativity on these platforms. The Japanese ace feels that her being more active on social media has led to people knowing more about her and then using it against her in a negative way.

I would say that I’m not as involved in social media anymore, just because I began to feel like it was very negative, I guess when people started knowing of me more. So I kind of disconnected myself from that. I know that social media in a way is a little bit unavoidable, so I think that I’m still learning.

Naomi Osaka told PEOPLE magazine

Osaka has probably learned that one way to cut out the negativity on social media platforms is to confront the trolls. She did just that when someone called her a fluke. She listed her achievements to the troll and said “you couldn’t even touch one of my accomplishments with your fingernail.”

Naomi Osaka happy about the tour taking mental health seriously

Naomi Osaka is one of the leaders on the WTA Tour when it comes to talking about mental health and its importance. She was one of the first athletes to take a break for her mental health. Osaka also penned a powerful essay about “the right to take a mental break from media scrutiny” for Time magazine in 2022.

She even earned praise from her fellow star athletes, including Stephen Curry, Michael Phelps, and Novak Djokovic, who applauded the Japanese tennis pro’s call for “measures to protect athletes, especially the fragile ones.”

Now, Osaka has reiterated her stance on mental health saying it might be of more importance than physical health. She also expressed delight at the fact that everyone on the tour is taking the issue seriously.

I think most people don’t know that mental health is as important as your physical health, and in some ways, it might be more important…I really appreciate that the conversation was taken really seriously, and I think all the players really appreciate that.

Notably, Osaka had revealed in 2018 that she battled depression. The WTA star then skipped the 2021 French Open and Wimbledon Championships for her mental health.
