Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka is known for her unique and bold fashion choices on court, which have been subject to both praise and criticism in the past. The 28-year-old stunned fans this time with an interesting look as she entered Rod Laver Arena to commence her 2026 Australian Open campaign.

She wore a frilly turquoise and white Nike outfit, with a white veil, and a white hat with a butterfly on it. She also carried a white umbrella. Ahead of the tournament, Osaka had also called out critics of attire, labelling them as “uncultured”.

Osaka faced Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in her opening round match in Melbourne, marking the first meeting between the two players. In the first set, Osaka surged to a 3-0 lead and then won the first set 6-3.

Osaka’s unforced errors crept on in the second set as Ruzic turned the tables, built a 3-0 lead, and took the second set 6-3. Osaka regained her lead in the third set, building a 2-0 lead, and although she was broken by Ruzic, who briefly led 4-3, Osaka quickly broke back to seal the decider, winning the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The inspiration behind Naomi Osaka’s Australian Open look

According to Vogue, Naomi Osaka’s 2026 Australian Open outfit draws inspiration from the jellyfish. Her vision for the outfit first materialized when she saw her two-year-old daughter, Shai, excitedly point to a jellyfish image while she was reading to her.

For the outfit, Osaka turned to London-based couturier Robert Wun, whose designs have been worn by the likes of Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Celine Dion, and Beyoncé. Taken by the jellyfish’s beauty and power, Osaka shared her ideas with the Nike team, who incorporated the sea creature into the look.

The jellyfish also holds significant value in Australia’s ecology and biodiversity. Australia is widely known for having some of the most venomous jellyfish in the world, such as the Box Jellyfish and the Irukandji Jellyfish. Northern Australia is especially known for its “stinger season” from November to May, when deadly jellyfish are common in coastal and reef waters.

Osaka has often taken inspiration from nature for her Grand Slam outfits. She wore sunflower-themed shoes and accessories for the Australian Open last year, truly tuning in to the Happy Slam vibe. Her Roland Garros outfit last year was inspired by sakura (cherry blossom), celebrating her Japanese heritage.

Naomi Osaka’s Australian Open campaign

Naomi Osaka won her second Grand Slam title at the 2019 Australian Open, defeating Petra Kvitova in the final. This triumph propelled her to the World No. 1 ranking. Osaka won her fourth Grand Slam title at the 2021 Australian Open, defeating Jennifer Brady in the final. Since this victory, she has not made it beyond the third round of a Grand Slam until the US Open last year, where she reached the semifinals.

Osaka is seeded 16th at this year’s tournament. She will face Sorana Cirstea in the second round. The Romanian defeated Eva Lys in the first round of the tournament. This will mark the second meeting between Osaka and Cirstea, who last met in the qualifying round of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, where Cirstea defeated Osaka in straight sets.

Osaka could potentially meet Iga Swiatke in the fourth round, Elena Rybakina or Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals, Jessica Pegula or Amanda Anisimova in the semfinals, and Aryna Sabalenka or Coco Gauff in the final.
