NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a massive fan following. The former Cup Series champion is always ready to greet his fans whenever given the chance. However, some interactions are more special than others. Earnhardt’s wife Amy Earnhardt revealed a recent fan interaction of her husband that stunned her completely.

The Earnhardt couple had gone out for dinner some time ago. At the restaurant, Dale Jr. managed to go unnoticed by everyone but one fan. The fan, who had impaired hearing, expressed his excitement to see the NASCAR veteran by enthusiastically pointing at the couple.

While Dale Earnhardt Jr. did not respond at first, the couple decided to foot the bill for the man. It turned out that the fan, Ricky, had just ordered $150 worth of margaritas. After the bill was paid, Ricky came up to the couple to thank them. The fan even taught the Earnhardt daughters some basic sign language, including the phrase ‘I love you.’

Amy Earnhardt responded to the gesture by a simple sign of ‘thank you.’ However, her husband replied to Ricky by signing, ‘Have a nice day.’ This shocked Amy, who had no idea that Dale Earnhardt Jr. knew sign language so well.

She admitted that she knew the NASCAR star knew a lot of things, but was stunned to see him know such perfect sign language. Her reaction was met with laughter from Ricky.

He was very excited, it was very cute… I know you know a bunch of random *** but I didn’t know you knew how to sign language, too. I was like joke was on me almost at that point. But it was amazing. I was impressed with Dale yet again.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals reason for learning sign language

As it turns out, Dale Jr. first learnt sign language three decades ago. The NASCAR veteran revealed that back in the mid-90s, he had a big fan who used to meet him every weekend. The fan, who was deaf, used to bring a notebook for Dale Jr. However, once he told him that he would like the NASCAR star to learn sign language so that they could communicate properly.

Since then, Dale Earnhardt Jr. tried his hands at sign language. Though, he has gotten rusty over the years. Dale Jr. revealed that before Ricky approached him, he had watched a video on YouTube to make sure his signs remained accurate when he had the interaction.

Back in the ’90s, around 1994-95, I was racing Myrtle Beach Speedway, and one of the fans that came every single weekend was deaf, and brought me a sign book. So he was telling me, ‘Man, I would like it if you might learn a couple signs so we could communicate.’ I watched the video on YouTube real quick and was like thinking in my mind like how to mimic the motions. And so I was like, ‘All right, so when he comes over here, I’ll just make sure I can sign to him so he’ll feel seen or heard, you know.
