Going skiing hasn’t been the choice for NASCAR drivers in the Next-Gen era. Hendrick Motorsporst’ Chase Elliott had major accident in 2023 that made him sit out six races and got him into a massive performance slump. The latest victim was RFK Racing owner driver Brad Keselowski who went on a Skiing vacation with his family and broke him femur in an accident.

The 2012 Champion had an immediate surgery and has been in rehab, till he got the medical clearance from NASCAR to race again. Brad Keselowski had to miss the Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, with the team deciding to substitute him with Corey LaJoie in the No:6 Ford.

I didn’t want to rush back. The team and I made the decision together that if all the rehab went absolutely perfect, we’d be ready like, literally, the day of the Clash. And that seemed super foolish and didn’t give us any time to do any testing on myself or anything like that.

Brad Keselowski told Bob Pockrass.

The team made the right call by not rushing the return and he now feels good, though there are still some small issues that needs to be addressed as the injury was significant. He is getting himself ready to race in Daytona with his titanium leg, with proper recovery plan in place.

I’m not great, but I’m good. I’m recovering really well. I had a major injury. I’m on a significant rehab plan to be back for the Daytona 500. … I’m now made of titanium in my leg.

Brad Keselowski is excited about the return and explained what kept him motivated

Getting the clearance to race at the Daytona 500 was major moment for the veteran driver as he has been working hard behind the scene to become healthy again. It would have been tough for him to miss the Daytona 500; hence he is more excited about getting back in the car.

Getting cleared was a huge moment for me. You put in the work, you trust the process, but until you hear that final ‘yes,’ nothing is guaranteed. Knowing what Daytona means, and how hard it would have been to miss it, made this moment even bigger. I’m grateful to the medical team and to NASCAR for being thorough, and I’m excited to get back in the car.

Brad Keselowski said.

Talking about the recovery, the veteran pointed out that discipline and patience helped him through the rehab. He also revealed that ‘Daytona. Earned, not given,’ poster he had on the wall that kept him motivated to get back on track.

This process was about discipline and patience. There were no shortcuts. I had a poster in my workout area that said, ‘Daytona. Earned, not given,’ and that became my mindset every day. The focus was on getting stronger, improving mobility, and making sure I was truly ready to race.

Brad Keselowski added.

The 2026 season is going to be challenging for the former champion not just because of the injury, as he needs to improve him performance significantly compared to last season. It would be interesting to see how everything will playout for him in the new championship format.
