Kyle Larson made NASCAR history last Sunday, after he beat RFK Racing’s Chris Beuscher with a 0.001 second lead. It’s the closest finish ever in the history of the sport. The winner was decided after a review, as the start-finish line wasn’t straight and NASCAR had to use the camera that was set up for that exact purpose at the track.

The sanctioning body shared the photo-finish image via their social media, and it caught the attention of JGR’s Denny Hamlin. Via his podcast, he shared his dislike towards the lack of quality in the image. Now, NASCAR’s spoke person Mike Forde, has reacted to it through a post he made on social media.

He pointed out that the NASCAR images weren’t of the same quality as the ones from the Kentucky Derby, because of the factors such as sunlight and humidity.  The race was hosted in the night, after a postponement due to heavy rain at Kansas. So the night-time was a big factor in the image quality. He also shared some past images which are clearer because they were from day races.

Good?/comment here from Denny Hamlin. He’s not alone. The quality of the photo has many factors: sunlight (which is why the Derby photo was clearer), humidity (it rained earlier), distance from S/F line (the cam is on the cold side of PR). Here are two examples during daylight… Also, a more accurate term for it is “image.” This is not a “photo”, but many thousands of frames that build an image

Kyle Larson made a Kentucky Derby reference after the win

After the race, winner Kyle Larson also made a reference to the Kentucky Derby, which hosted it’s 150th anniversary race on the same week. He shared side by side images of the three-horse photo-finish derby and the Kansas finish, hilariously flexing how close his win was.

The Kansas Cup weekend was a great weekend for the sport, other than the drop in TV number due to the race being postponed. The post-race conversations being around factors such as the crooked finish line or the images, over the criticism of race product shows it was a nice race that NASCAR should work on having more.
