Since the back-to-back underwhelming short track Cup race products, that came at Bristol and last week at Martinsville, many in the NASCAR community has been demanding changes. The lack of entertainment has given the racers and crew members who were already against the current direction the sport is going with the car a more voice.

Now Chad Knaus, Jimmie Johnson’s ex-crew chief who was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame recently has shared his opinion on how to fix the cars. He pointed out that reducing the downforce is making the races worse every other week and it shouldn’t be the path to take. Knaus admitted that he knows his suggestion might not align with everyone.

In my opinion, we continue to put downforce off of these cars and the racing continues to get worse and worse. I don’t think that’s what we need to be doing. Not gonna be popular by saying this with some folks but from an efficiency standpoint, I think you put the downforce back on the cars, you race them the way they were intended to be raced when the car was initially designed.
Chad Knaus told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

As Knaus admitted his suggestion isn’t the most famous one, but his decade long experience and the seven championship he has won with Johnson is enough to give them enough validation. If NASCAR doesn’t want to increase the horsepower and Goodyear isn’t interested in having tier with more wear, this can be the right path to take.

Chad Knaus urges NASCAR to let teams work on the car

The limitation NASCAR has put on teams regarding the modification that has to be done with the cars has been a major reason why there hasn’t been much difference among cars performance on tack. Knaus wants NASCAR to increase the downforce and also let teams to work on the car, which would create discrepancy in performance.

My vote would be to put some more downforce on the cars, let the guys work on the cars, let them go race… Try to have some discrepancy in the performance of the vehicle.

Chad Knaus said.

NASCAR has to come up with one update or another to make racing in the short-tracks better as it’s something that everyone in the racing community wants to happen. The delays on decision making and on potential tweaks isn’t a good look for the sport in both sporting and marketing sense.
