Chad Knaus is an American, former NASCAR Crew Chief born on August 5th, 1971. He has worked for different NASCAR teams, namely Dale Earnhardt Incorporated, Melling Racing, Tyler Jet Motorsports, and Hendrick Motorsports. As the only NASCAR Crew Chief to win 5 straight championships, he is considered one of the greatest. Currently, he is the Vice President of the competition for Hendrick Motorsports. He is best known for working with Jimmie Johnson, as he has 81 victories with him.
In 1991, Knaus moved to North Carolina to chase a job in stock car racing. From 1993 – 1997, Knaus worked with Hendrick Motorsports, the crew chief at that time was Ray Evernham, and the driver was No.24, Jeff Gordon. His time there was fruitful as he progressed to managing the chassis from being a general fabricator for the team.
After the 1997 season, Knaus worked as a car chief for Dale Earnhardt Incorporated with the No.1 team. In 1999, Evernham left Hendrick Motorsports and asked Knaus to join him in Melling Racing to lead the Dodge development team. It was then that he worked with Stacy Compton, a driver, and as they had a good relationship, it resulted in Knaus getting promoted to crew chief for Compton in the year 2000. In 2002, Knaus returned to Hendrick Motorsports and became the crew chief for Jimmie Johnson, driver of the car No. 48. In the 2003 and 2004 Cup Chase, they finished P2, and in 2005, Knaus and Johnson finished P5 in the standings.
In 2006, they had their first big win, they won the championship for Cup Series. They had 24 top-10 finishes, 13 top-5 finishes, and 5 wins. In 2007 the team won their 2nd championship and had the best 10 wins. The team’s 2008 season was also joyful as they leveled the NASCAR history set by Cale Yarborough, winning their 3rd consecutive title. The duo recorded 61 wins and 5 cup series titles in NASCAR. It later increased to 83 wins and 7 cup championships. In 2018 Knaus and Johnson’s partnership ended. Knaus went to the team with William Byron in 2019, and they had their first win in 2020. In 2022, Knaus stepped down from his position as a crew chief and became the team, Hendrick Motorsports vice president.
