22-year-old Chandler Smith’s NASCAR career so far has been a strong of hit and miss. Despite being a capable driver with multiple wins on his resume, Smith has found himself in a poor spot with massive uncertainty over his future. He returned to Toyota after a failed stint with Kaulig Racing in 2023, with Joe Gibbs Racing in the Xfinity Series and was hopeful of establishing himself as a top contender.

Chandler Smith started the season on high note, with consistently finishing inside the top 5 and securing two wins before hitting a rough patch midway to the season. He was able to bounce back once the playoff starts, and came close to wins multiple times, but has failed to make the final move. Smith has found himself in a must-win situation in with the Martinsville race left before the finale to make it into the championship-4, following his poot result at Miami.

Following the race, the youngster was pretty candid speaking to the media about uncertainty over his future and confessed that he doesn’t have a 2025 ride despite finishing inside the top 5 In the 15 of the last 30 races. He admitted that if things didn’t go as planned and fails to secure a seat, he might have to go back working for his father.

Well, I don’t have a ride next year, Bob.  I could be working for my dad’s construction business and I could be hanging it up at the end of this year.

Chandler Smith said via Frontstretch.

He continued the conversation about the lack of seats in the garage at the moment, that could match his talent. Smith revealed that the seats that are available at the moment for him demands him coming in with a massive sponsor supporting him, which he will find hard to match.

Chandler Smith is grateful to JGR for the chance

In his media interaction, Chandler Smith also shared his gratitude towards his current team Joe Gibbs Racing, that too a chance on him this season. If not for some unfortunate mistakes, he wouldn’t have found himself in the must-win situation going into Martinsville, but he is ready for redemption and wants to do it for his team.

We still had an amazing season this year. Super, super grateful for the opportunity that I had this year with everybody that I was able to work with at Joe Gibbs Racing.

Chandler Smith added.

Though getting a seat will be tough for Smith, it won’t be impossible. With his speed, consistency and race win experience, he would be an asset to any team that signs him. It will be embarrassing for the sport as a whole if money stops such a top talent from racing full-time next season.
