Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. replacement, Chase Briscoe, started his time with the TRD team strong with a pole position win at Daytona 500. But he failed to convert the front row start to a solid result and had to settle for a P4 finish, which to came curtesy of the dramatic wreck on the last lap. To make matters worse, the No:19 was given a L2 penalty for illegal modifications.
In the inspection, it was found that the spoiler, which is a single source supplied part, was modified. The team was given $100K fine alongside points reduction and suspension of crew chief James Small. Chase Briscoe lost 100 points alongside 10 playoff points, putting him dead-last on the table. The Toyota racer has shared his verdict on the penalty ahead of the Atlanta race weekend.
I would say this year my approach is way different in general. We should be able to go to the race track and contend for wins on a lot more consistent basis. So, you know, my whole approach going into this year was trying to win multiple races and that doesn’t change.
Chase Briscoe said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Further talking about the point, Briscoe pointed out that the point situation he is in is unfortunate but highlighted that since a race win will get him a spot in the playoffs, he is less concerned. So, he is focused on winning the race and potentially a championship down the road.
The points situation obviously is unfortunate, but I mean, we still just need to go win races at the end of the day. That’s what we’re here to do is try to win races and you know, potentially try to win a championship, too. To have a chance to win a championship you need to be winning races, anyway.

Chase Briscoe declares the penalty doesn’t change his racing approach
In the same interview, Chase Briscoe pointed out that his approach towards the whole season won’t change regardless losing the points. His agenda is to win races and secure their spot in the playoff, before starting to work on securing more playoff points.

So, yeah, it doesn’t change the approach at all. I don’t even think from a strategy standpoint or anything, it changes anything. You just go there and try to win the race and you know, hopefully, our cars are good enough to do that.
Chase Briscoe said.
The comments from the TRD drivers shows, though disappointed with the results he isn’t ready to change anything because of it and is determined to comeback. He would also be hoping that the appeal they have filed against the penalty will give them some relaxation regarding point deduction as well as the fine.
