Joe Gibbs Racing’s Chase Briscoe had a solid start to his debut with the Toyota team, replacing 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr., as he secured pole position for the Daytona 500. But he couldn’t pull of a magical win as ex-teammate Kevin Harvick predicted. His day ended with a P4 finish, owing to the late race wreck that helped him to gain some positions.
Chase Briscoe’s team’s disappointment had doubled, with NASCAR penalizing them massively over illegal modifications. In the inspection of the No:19 Toyota Camry, it was found that the violated the Section 14.1 of the Rule Book. The spoiler base was modified, which is illegal as it is a single-source part that shouldn’t be tampered with.

JGR was found to be in violation of Section 14.1 of the Rule Book, which pertains to overall assembled vehicles rules, and 14.5.8, which deals with the spoiler. Specifically, the spoiler base was found to be modified on the No. 19 car. The spoiler base is a single-source part and cannot be modified.
NASCAR said in a statement.
Briscoe was docked 100 driver points and 10 playoff points. This will put him in a negative 67 points in the table going into the Atlanta race. JGR was also given a 100 owner points, as well as 10 playoff points deduction, alongside fine of $100,000 and four race suspension of crew chief James Small. Todd Gilliland and Cody Ware were also given small penalties for safety violations.
Joe Gibbs Racing is set to appeal the decision
As expected JGR is disappointed with the penalty decision and has released a statement regarding the same. It was revealed that the issues were caused by supplied part interferences and is set to appeal the decision.

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) will appeal the penalty issued by NASCAR to the No. 19 Cup Series team today…The issue in question was caused in the assembly process when bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid caused the pre-drilled holes to wear due to supplied part interferences.

It is highly unlikely that JGR will be able reduce the severity of the punishment with the appeal. Last years, many team, including the big guns, Hendrick Motorsports faced the same issues with the spoiler and failed to reduce the penalties.
