Joe Gibbs Racing star driver Christopher Bell came into the Darlington Raceway with high hopes. He started the race strong with a P7 finish in stage one, before Spire Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar ended his hopes with small incident. The TRD driver went 20 positioned down, resulting in the disappointing P29 finish.
During the pit stop on stage two after a caution, Christopher Bell exited his pit-box the same time Carson Hocevar was coming in hot with the No:77. Instead of slowing down and let the No:20 pass before stopping, he came in fast. Bell made contact with the rear and spun the youngster out. The latter lost his momentum and the former’ car had significant damage.
On his post-race press conference, Christopher Bell didn’t hold back and called out the 2024 Rookie of the Year. He declared that the youngster should give him the way, considering the fact that he was the one the caused the caution, subsequently the stop. It was very frustrating for Bell as he was the victim of Hocevar doing too much to make up position he lost.
The 77 just didn’t yield. He didn’t give way, and I would say that it’s our responsibility to not run into him if he’s racing for position, but the fact that he was the one who brought the yellow out, the only reason that we had contact was because he was so far behind the field catching up. You know, that’s very frustrating.
Christopher Bell told Tim Moore of Motorsports Today.
The veteran driver highlighted that it not just the driver that is to blame for the incident and some blame should go to the No:77 Chevy crew who should have informed him about the pit situation. There was no reason for Hocevar to desperately attempt move up the field, while he was pitting alongside the playoff drivers.
Honestly, I don’t really give blame to Carson. I think it’s more on his team to not let him know the circumstances that he’s pitted on an island with all the playoff cars. He just spun, brought out the yellow. He’s not going to gain a spot on pit road. And he didn’t give way and ruined my night. So, it’s a bummer.
Christopher Bell added.
Christopher Bell came into the 2025 playoffs with more hope
This wasn’t the result the JGR driver expected, when he came into the 2025 playoffs as he was more confident than he was ever been before Darlington. In 2024, the schedule was something he liked, as it had two superspeedway races. This year it more balanced, with just Talladega being the only plate race.

So, I will be honest, last year was really scary. It was daunting the way that the schedule laid out. We had Atlanta Motor Speedway which has transitioned to a superspeedway nowadays, and we had that in the opening round. We had Talladega in there in the Round of 12.
Christopher Bell said.
The schedule also suits him better, giving him more confidence and optimism. He thought he was poised for a string playoff run, starting from Darlington. The results from Sunday shows an entirely different story.
Where this year the schedule plays out a little bit better for me. So, that makes me more optimistic… So, the Round of 16 is a great schedule for me with Darlington, Gateway and Bristol in it. Round of 12 is another really, really good schedule and group of races for us. So, I feel like we’re poised for a great playoff run.
Christopher Bell added.
The comments from the Joe Gibbs Racing driver shows he missed out a big opportunity to secure some good points, to advance to the next round. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the coming events, starting from Enjoy Illinois 300 at Gateway next week.
