The NASCAR Cup garage was surprised when it was announced that Spire Motorsports will part ways with Corey LaJoie at the end of the 2024 season. Initially the team had plans to go ahead with the veteran driver and grow the team further under Rodney Childers, but the inconsistency was too much for them to overlook.
It was a hard decision to make for Spire Motorsports as Corey Lajoie was the cornerstone of their development over almost half a decade. While talking about the exit via Stacking Pennies podcast, he pointed out that Spire didn’t give him a lot of reason for firing him and he didn’t want a list of reasons as well.
I got fired on Wednesday. They didn’t really give me a whole lot of reasons, but I don’t want to get too much into it because then we were able to unplug, take the RV on a trip Friday to Monday and I had some realizations.Corey LaJoie said via Stacking Pennies podcast.
Corey LaJoie further pointed out that he isn’t uncomfortable with the position he is in now as unlike in the past where he was given one-year contracts, he got more value at Spire. He isn’t also uncomfortable because of the fact that he has been axed from the teams before.
I’ve never found myself in this position with the sweat equity that went into the team and all the things to get to this point, but everywhere that I’ve been has always been one-year deals. So, this position I find myself in currently isn’t uncomfortable. It’s not someplace I’ve never been before.Corey LaJoie added.
Corey LaJoie has moved on a bit from the axing
While further talking about the point, the veteran pointed out that he has almost moved on from the incident and took the time to appreciate the supports he got at Spire. He is happy for the years off belief that was shown by the team over the years.
I think where I’m at currently, a week removed, is that I’m super appreciative. I’m super appreciative of Jeff [Dickerson] and TJ [Puchyr] from Spire for giving me the opportunity, for believing in me from the jump when we were trying to whiteboard this thing, and what we’ve grown it to has been pretty cool.Corey LaJoie said.
At the same time, he is disappointed with the fact that he can’t be with Spire when the team is taking the major steps towards becoming a top team again. It would be interesting to see where Corey LaJoie’s will end up in the next-phase of his career.
