NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. has long been a critic of the drop in the quality of the short-track racing in the Next-Gen era. The new generation car combined with the tire with limited wear has been a major issue and this weekends playoff race at Bristol Motor Speedway showed everything wrong with it.

The race was a massive disappointment with tires playing no part compared to the regular season event. It just destroyed all the hopes fans had because of the small progress they made in the Watkins Glen race and before. Dale Earnhardt Jr. via his podcast explained his frustration and disappointment about the race.

You’re like ‘Okay, they’re getting aggressive and we’re making some gains.’ Then we had this weekend and you’re like, ‘What in the hell is that?’ I don’t know that they have the answers. That’s what’s frustrating is I don’t know that they know why it reacted the way it did this weekend and why we had the race we had.

Junior went on admit that the NASCAR officials are confused and puzzled about why the Bristol tires bailed on them. He He then recalled the demand for short track racing five years ago and how much it has dropped with in a handful of years. He sees this drop in the interest as a travesty that should have been avoided.

They’re puzzled and I’m not confident we know what to do about it, which sucks man because just about five years ago, we were all begging for more short tracks. It was a hashtag trending on social media. And now, nobody wants to go to one. Now, nobody wants to see one on the schedule next week. What a travesty.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added.

NASCAR didn’t expect the Bristol race to be a such a disappointment

The Senior VC of NASCAR Elton Sawyer came out apologizing to the fans about the Bristol race being a disappointment. He admitted that the sport doesn’t really know what went wrong last Sunday as everything before the race pointed at it being a success.

We’ve seen some great racing throughout the year. Richmond comes to mind. Watkins Glen, just a week ago with great tire fall-off. The anticipation, as we rolled into Bristol, was that we would see something very similar. Obviously, we didn’t see that as the weekend started to unfold.

Elton Sawyer said.

The admission from NASCAR shows they are, just like the fans is puzzled why the race didn’t turn out as expected for them. They now have work hard to find the solution and should demand more from the side of Goodyear as well.
