Justin Allgaier and Connor Zilisch are two of the most exciting talents in the Xfinity Series. Zilisch is touted by many to be a future Cup Series champion. During the Nashville race, the two JR Motorsports teammates battled it out for victory. Now, team owner and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. has responded to this intra-team rivalry.
Throughout the race on Saturday, Allgaier and Zilisch were toe-to-toe. The latter hoped to steal the victory away from the reigning Xfinity champion. However, after a hard-fought battle, it was Justin Allgaier who headed to Victory Lane in the Music City.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was happy to see his drivers pushing one another. He pointed out that Connor Zilisch was benefitting from having to fight someone like Justin Allgaier on-track, giving him some much-needed experience. Moreover, the 18-year-old was also being challenged by other drivers in the field.
You know, it’s obviously great for Connor to have somebody like Justin around that’s running as well as he is, as well as the other competition, of course. Connor’s being challenged at every turn.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said at Nashville.
On the other hand, Dale Jr. insisted that Aligaier too needed to be pushed by a young star like Connor Zilisch. At the age of 38, the reigning Xfinity champion needs to have a challenge at every race to ensure that he stays at the top of his game. With some talented youngsters at JRM, Justin Allgaier is really getting a run for his money, particularly against Zilisch.
But it’s good for Justin to be tested, too, especially at that age. You need something to continue to challenge you, and it wasn’t an easy win. He had a little pressure there late.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. explained.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. happy to see drivers being pushed midseason
While Justin Allgaier is one of the best performing drivers in the Xfinity Series, Dale Jr. wants to see him facing a challenge all year long. The NASCAR veteran understands that drivers need to be pushed at every occasion to stay on edge, particularly before the all important Playoffs.

The JRM team owner pointed out that a driver might lose their edge right before the Playoffs if they’ve already peaked midseason. This could throw a spanner in the works for the team, with rivals getting the better momentum. However, drivers like Zilisch and Allgaier are going to always test each other on-track, ensuring that they stay at the top of their game all year long.
You want to peak at the right time, and if you’re really successful, in the early part of the middle part of the season, you can tend to nose over a little bit, and while other teams are working to get better, they swing right past you at the wrong point, right? When the playoffs are starting, and you’ve lost a little bit of your advantage, if not all of it.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. added
Dale Earnhardt Jr. understands that drivers and the team cannot slack off in NASCAR. The Xfinity Series is highly competitive, with multiple drivers being in the mix for victory. This makes it even more important that Connor Zilisch and Justin Allgaier perform at their peak throughout the year.
The Nashville race was the perfect example of how Dale Jr. wants his team to perform, a clean and hard battle, without any damage. Now, it remains to be seen whether this momentum is carried over to the remainder of the 2025 campaign.
