NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. is one of the most influential figures of the sport and despite retiring over a decade ago, he is still the most famous racer in the stock car racing scene. He had to make a lot of sacrifices to create the legacy and one of them was delaying having a family with his wife Amy Earnhardt.

In the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, with racer Cleetus McFarland as the guest, Dale Earnhardt Jr. talked about losing his father Dale Earnhardt in his 20’s. He then confessed that he regrets the fact that he will be in his 60s when his daughters graduate, and he is concerned about the potential of him not being there for them in their 20s.

I’ll tell you. My age, right? I worry about my girls. When they graduate, I will be in my late 60s. I felt like having kids at my age… I know what it’s like to lose a parent when you’re young. Even in your 20s, you’re not really prepared. I felt like, ‘Shoot. I don’t want to bring a child into this world and leave them in their early 20s or even earlier’

I’m hoping they’ll deal cards more this year and I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the future. We’d love to see them run full-time obviously. They’re just good people.

Steve Phelps told SBJ.

Many in the racing community shares the same feeling, as everyone knows the massive impact the return of Earnhardt to the Cup Series can have on the sport. It would be interesting to see how the sanctioning body is going to help JRM to race full-time in the premier stock car racing series.
