2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson is part of the elite list of drivers who has a tough time to perform in the Superspeedways, that demands more than just pure racing skills. But his attitude seems to have changed a bit following the first two races of the 2025 season at Daytona and Atlanta, two drafting tracks.
Kyle Larson finished P3 on Sunday at the Georgian track. He was a strong contender for win, as he gave a solid fight to arch-rival and race winner Christopher Bell. NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. spotted this change in performance and via his podcast revealed the conversation they had after the event.
I texted him after the race and I said, ‘What you did today, it looked fun, it looked badass from where I was sitting…But what you did today is exactly what Daytona and Talladega used to be when you could do whatever you wanted and take a car and make moves and show your skill.’
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on the Dale Jr. Download.
The JRM co-owner praised the No:5 HMS racer for finally racing with the level of aggression and judgement Superspeedway demands. He was more impressed by the reply from Larson, who admitted that he finally had a lot of fun in a drafting track unlike in the past where he used to hate the events.
I said, ‘I believe that you would have been great at it had you had the chance to race in that era. But what you did today is pretty much what it was like.’ He said, ‘Man, today was fun as hell.’ He had a blast. And I like that.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is excited about Kyle Larson’s change of mind
This change of attitude excites Junior as he was sad when Larson admitted coming in the 2025 season that he would be okay to end his career without a win at Dayton or Dega. Now he is happy how the No:5 team can finally fight for wins in the coming Superspeedway events.

I was sad a little bit when I heard he wasn’t a fan of Daytona and Talladega for a handful of years. Rightfully so, when I watch it looks frustrating as a driver. But I was glad to hear him get out of that car, because I know if Daytona and Talladega come trending in that direction, oh man. So that was pretty neat.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
If the Atlanta race wasn’t a one-off, the racing community can confidently state that Kyle Larson has identified the core issues he had racing at drafting tracks and found the way to resolve it. This will make him a contender in almost all the remaining races of the 2025 season.
