The NASCAR Cup Series team and the series owners the France Family has been involved in a new charter agreement negotiation over two years. Recent reports suggest that all but two teams have signed the contract and agreed to the new deal, that would last from 2025 to 2031. Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports are the teams still on the rebellious side.

The decision has sent shockwaves to the whole NASCAR community as no one expected 23XI Racing to pull off such a bold move, which can ruin everything they have built in the sport and their plans for expansion. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. was among the many fans who were shocked learning about the news.

He took it to X to share his verdict on the decision, writing “holy cow (cow emoji)” resharing the news. The outcome of the duel between NASCAR and 23XI will dictate if Junior enter the Cup series or not. The charter not being a sustainable investment option has long been the primary reason why JRM has never actively looked to field cars on the top-tier.

23XI Racing being on the list is not a huge surprise as they have been really vocal about NASCAR having too much power over teams and adding unfair terms to the deal, with co-owner Denny Hamlin at the forefront. But with almost all teams signing, they are in a peculiar spot that might hurt everyone involved.

Reports suggest NASCAR teams were coerced into signing charter agreement

As per the reports from AP’s Jenna Fryer, the NASCAR cup teams were forced to make the final decision and were coerced to agree to the deal. If it’s come out to be the truth, its quit unbecoming, considering at the end of the day NASCAR was considered a family business and such measures proves the alleged corporate takeover of the sport.

Similar sources tell me any teams who have signed were “coerced and threatened” to do so… “Sign or we will revoke your charters” can be scary language to a family business.

The PR disastor the decision from 23XI Racing and FRM has brought in to the sport is huge. If one of the two sides weren’t this firm on their stands, things could have sorted differently. It would be interesting to see how the drama will playout now and how it will affect the sport going forward.
