The Kyle Busch rule was introduced in 2010, limiting the starts of Cup regular in the lower divisions and since it’s inception, it has been a controversial decision. Hall of Famer and JR Motorsports co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. sees the time might be right for a small change to the rule, that could attract more fans and make racing more competitive.
In the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, two rimes Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared his thoughts experience Cup racers being limited to five Xfinity or Truck races a season. He is okay with the limit there at the moment and admitted that he hates the fact that they were allowed to race for the championship in the past.
I think it’s fine. I mean, they compete in them now. They’ve limited them to, like, what, five starts a year? I don’t even know what it is, so I can’t really complain about it, because I don’t even know what the limits are now. I didn’t like when they could race for the championship.

Further talking about the point, the veteran admitted that he will be okay if NASCAR decides change the limit to ten races. This because of the fact that majority of drivers wants to see more Cup drivers racing in the lower divisions, giving the upcoming drivers an opportunity to taste what it will be like fight the big boys. Having the likes of Kyle Busch on the Xfinity and Truck tracks more often, the attendance for these events will increase significantly, eventually benefiting everyone.
I mean, I didn’t like that. Right now it’s five (starts), but I’d be fine if they went to ten… The thing is, there’s a lot to it. Fans will say, ‘I want to see the Cup guys in those races.’ Fans are going to tune in more if more Cup guys are in those races. If you’re a fan of somebody like Kyle Busch or whoever, and you want to see him race more, and you’re going to the race…you’re more excited to see the Saturday race, because your guy’s out there.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared his perspective as a car owner on the issue
During the same discussion, Junior explained what he thinks about the Cup driver’s lower division ventures as a team owner. He understands why fans want more Cup drivers’ race, but as an owner he wants to see a balance.

So, there’s a lot of people that want to see that. They want to see the Cup guys out there more, and I get that. As a car owner, there’s a perfect balance. Like, yes, I want Cup guys in my cars, because, man, they go win some races, right? I love that.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
Having Cup drivers every time isn’t good for full-time Xfinity team owner like Dale Jr. as these veterans cost him opportunities to win. These makes it harder for the young racers to establish themselves and attract sponsors to the team, as they expect their cars to be in the victory lane.
But if I’m in a situation where I’m a regular, and I don’t have a Cup guy in my car —if I own a team that doesn’t have Cup resources, doesn’t have Cup drivers, then my chance to win, or even run in the top ten—gets harder.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. added.
The comments from Junior shows having Cup regular’s a double-edged sword, but with the right balance everyone can benefit from it. Considering the current situation, five race limit seems a better option than 10. Instead of opening more doors for veteran’s, NASCAR should urge more top drivers to race in the Xfinity Series, giving the youngsters more knowledge of how things change at the top.
