There has long been rumours that NASCAR is going international with the Next-Gen Cup cars. Returning to Mexico or Canada has been the most often talked about first step in the sanctioning body’s effort to widen its market. But according to latest rumours the shift might come at the cost of an iconic short track.

Since the underwhelming race that was hosted by Richmond Raceway this year, rumors about the track losing a one of its two-race date have been intensified. Recently there has been rumors that NASCAR is looking to host a road course race at Mexico, which is a huge motorsports market and according to Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. Richmond would be the track that might get sacrificed.

He pointed out that that he finds in frustrating that the historic tracks are losing its race date and predicted what might be coming for Richmond. Juniors’ fear legit considering at the end of the racing is about entertainment and though it’s the car that’s the real issue, changing the track is the feasible option there is for NASCAR.

When we had a really tough race at Richmond a couple weeks ago, I said, hey man, we're going to probably lose Richmond to a road course. And now the rumor is we're probably going to Mexico. It's frustrating for me. There's nothing wrong with Richmond, you know, and we're going to leave Richmond to go race in Mexico. We're going to leave all these traditional ovals to go race a road course. We went to Chicago and ran a street course. We're going to go to, we're probably going to go to Mexico.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is finding it hard to get excited by the similar changes in the sport

Before giving the Mexico revelation, the JR Motorsports co-owner pointed out that he is finding it hard to accept NASCAR decision to remove traditional tracks for new venues. He isn’t either happy or excited about what might be the race product in the new tracks.

Something that's been a historical part of our sport for a really long time in terms of like a facility racetrack, it's getting harder for me to be happy about that or be excited about that.

The two times Xfinity Series champion represents the emotion of many fans in the NASCAR community over short track getting irrelevant. NASCAR should keep these concerns in mind before making the final calls on the future of fan favourite tracks.
