The NASCAR Cup Series race last Sunday at Sonoma witnessed yet another Shane van Gisbergen masterclass. The three-time Supercars champion dominated the proceeding to secure his third win of the season and exposed the significant skill gap between him and the rest of the grid. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. is one of the many racing legends that’s in awe over the situation.
In the latest episode of his podcast, Dale Jr. Download, the two times Xfinity Series champion shared his thoughts on racer’s performance and revealed one of the biggest power moves made by the veteran racer. The ex-HMS driver was beyond surprised watching Shane van Gisbergen flipping the second stage without any resistance.
I thought it was a good race. From just a general perspective of entertainment. … Look at (Shane van Gisbergen). The guy, when he flipped Stage Two and won it, that was like, ‘Holy shit,’ right? What does anybody else — what can you do? If a guy flips the stage and then wins the stage, that’s the ultimate f*** you.

The rest of the garage didn’t have anything to offer as a challenge to him in that situation that could have ruined the No:88 Chevy’s momentum, that would have helped SVG’s rivals to secure a race win at the end. Dale Earnhardt Jr. asserted that the only way to beat the Kiwi racer at the situation was the rest of field to not pit and cause a traffic issue.
The rest of the fields has no — there’s no strategy, unless they all didn’t pit and put him in the back of the field. Eventually, you’ve got to pay the penalty and come to pit road and get fuel and tires and all those things. I mean, he just had it covered.

Michael McDowell asserts Shane van Gisbergen isn’t unbeatable on road courses
One of the few drivers that has affected the most with Shane van Gisbergen’s dominance is Michael McDowell, as the road course races offers him a bigger shot at winning races compared to other venues. But he has failed to match the Trackhouse racer and now has to put all his eggs on the Daytona race to have a shot at playoff entry, if he can’t win at Watkins Glen, the last non-oval race of the season.

But McDowell isn’t losing his hope as he has hopes about defeating the No:88 Chevy driver, as he doesn’t believe the Cup rookie is unbeatable. He pointed out that the biggest advantage the racer has is his vast experience, as he has raced in road courses over the last two decades, in similar cars.
It’s that he’s a really, really good race car driver, very experienced on road courses and cars that are similar style, and it’s what he’s done for the last 20 years, and he knows exactly the feel that he needs and the feel that he wants, and you know, he’s just that good. I mean, he’s just that good, so you know, in my mind, it pushes me to be better. I don’t think he’s unbeatable.
Michael McDowell said.
The comments from the Spire Motorsports driver seems solid, as he is someone that is known for being a strong competitor and he has something to prove against the Kiwi racer. He needs more than just a fast car to win a race against the Trackhouse Racing driver and luck as well as proper strategy will be necessary.
