NASCAR introduced a five-race bracket challenge for the 2025 season, inspired by Denny Hamlin’s idea, with a $1 million reward. The first two rounds of the challenge has been really impressive, with some drivers taking the duels seriously. But there are still some fans that hates the idea, which angers Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr.

In the latest episode of his Dale Jr. Download podcast, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was asked about the complaints from some fans about the broadcasting crew covering the bracket challenge significantly. He is not impressed with the haters and gave them the example of the Bubba Wallace versus Alex Bowman aggressive dule, as proof for the challenge making racing better.

Why are you f*cking complaining about this bracket? … They’re people saying that there’s too much talk about the bracket. But it’s literally, like, these two guys, Bubba and Bowman, are in this thing for $1 million. They are battling on the racetrack, spinning each other out, and whoever wins that battle is going to advance into the next round, and it’s eight drivers, then it’s four and two for $1 million.

Midway to the race, Wallace and Bowman who were on the same bracket found themselves in the duel with the latter having fresh tires. The 23XI Racing driver was determined to keep his rival behind him, and did it for a couple of laps by making aggressive contacts. But Wallace pushed things too much resulting in a retaliation from Bowman resulting in the No:23 car spinning out and losing in challenge.

Highlighting about this battle and many underdogs wins that happened in the challenge, he pointed out that everyone is racing with more caution and aggression owing to this factor. The fact that the first thing that came into the mind of drivers involved in the lap-4 multi-car pileup caused by Carson Hocevar, was their shot at $1 million payday ending.

Why in the f*ck would we not talk about this? We were listening to drivers after the big pileup between Turns 10 and 11, and they were all going, ‘Oh, man, there’s your bracket buddy. He’s all f*cked up in this one.’

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. asserts the challenge matters to drivers and teams more

Further talking about the point, the two times Xfinity Series champion called BS in some drivers are teams playing down the impact of the challenge. He pointed out that they are acting like they don’t care, but they actually are concerned about it a lot.

Even though the drivers and the teams are going to be like, ‘It’s not priority, it’s not the most important thing today,’ they’re still thinking about it. They’re still concerned about it.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

He highlighted that this active conversation that exists in the garage as well as on the race track regarding the bracket challenge is the reason why they are covering it in the broadcast. They will continue to give it the same significance on broadcast for the upcoming rounds.

When they’re sitting there and the guy they’re going up against in the bracket is wrecked out of the race, and they’re talking about it on the radio, we’re gonna talk about it ourselves. I don’t see why anybody would be upset that we want to have this bracket.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added.

The comments from the Hall of famer as well as the opinion of majority of the racing community about the bracket challenge is positive and the racing had gotten better with it. It is not one of the gimmicks that has affected the racing negatively, like many other changed that’s been introduced over the years. It would be interesting to see who is going to win the maiden $1 million from the tournament.
