Dale Earnhardt Jr. spills the beans on reason behind choosing No:40 car number for JRM’s Cup debut
NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared how they decided the car number for the JR Motorsports’ Daytona 500 debut.

The hype around the 2025 NASCAR Cup season opener, the Daytona 500 was doubled when it was announced that Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s JR Motorsports announced their debut in the top division. Reigning Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier will drive the No:40 Chevy in the crown jewel race, with the support from Hendrick Motorsports.
The car number choice for the race was really intriguing, as there were many choices that would have suited the JRM entry and its legacy better. The Hall of Fame owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared how the decision about the number choice was made in the recent episode of his podcast. The No:40 was selected owing to the connection with Travellers Whiskey, their sponsor.
Dale Jr. revealed that since it is also the first ever NASCAR race, they decided to give them a little skin. He pointed out that both parties have done a lot of compromises and sees giving them the number as an important compromise.

The 2025 Daytona 500 is set to feature around 45 cars according to the latest reports. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sees it as a good sign about the health of the sport and highlighted that its always good to see if less cars shows up for the event.
The comment from Junior shows the sports is currently getting back to the good sport it once was and might be able to get back to its glory days. It would be interesting to see if all the expected 45 cars would show up for the race and who will be the five racers that would fail to qualify for the event.
