Defending champion Ryan Blaney was excited about securing yet another strong finish at the Goodyear 400 after a strong end to stage one. But he was in a for huge disappointment as misjudged move from William Byron during a three-wide battle resulted in the No:22 ending on the wall and eventually getting DNFed.
Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin via his podcast broke down the incident and pointed out that William Byron is definitely at fault for the wreck. He asserted that the move made by the HMS No:24 Chevy driver was inevitably going to wreck someone. This was the reason why Ryan Blaney was super frustrated at the Chevy driver.
It’s just a racing thing. The 24 was definitely the one at fault but it’s not like [Byron] ran into someone and caused them to wreck. He just made a move that was inevitably going to end in a wreck.Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.
Before giving the verdict on the incident, Hamlin had pointed out that the move employed by the three times race winner this season had very law success rate and high percentage of chances of a potential wreck. It is because of the fact that it was the Chevy driver’s responsibility to keep the car on the inside lane and not to squeeze his way up the track.
Denny Hamlin says he had significant damages due to the wreck
The No:11 Toyota Camry also suffered significant damage because of the incident according to Denny Hamlin. He pointed out, while explaining how inevitable the crash was, that his car made contact with Chris Buescher’s Ford, which had made contact with Blaney’s car after crashing into the wall.
If it wasn’t the 19 [Truex Jr.] and the 12 [Blaney] that was going to wreck it was going to be us, the guys that were behind. Because I think I was right behind the 17 [Chris Buescher]. The 17 hit the 19, I hit the 17. It caused a lot of damage for our 11 car for sure.Denny Hamlin said.
While Hamlin was able to recover and finish inside the top-5, Blaney on the other hand couldn’t and his hopes of a solid finish was ruined because of the wreck. Since Blaney has promised to hit Byron back for the incident, the Hendrick Motorsports driver have to be bit careful in the coming races.
