Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin created history on Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, securing his 60th career Cup race win, becoming only the fourth driver to achieve the feat in this century. His 6th win of the season came with a masterful run in the last ten laps taking advantage of a lucky restart.

Talking about the win after the race, Denny Hamlin was emotional and speechless. The veteran admitted that it’s the best he could’ve secured that 60th career win and pointed out that if he had crossed the feat at Talladega next week, the emotions might not have been the same. He came to weekend talking about the record with his closed one and manifested the South Point 400 trophy.

I don’t know if I could have scripted it better. I don’t know, like a win at Talladega for 60 would still be awesome, but not like this. Not in the fashion I had to do it in the last 10 laps. This race, I talked about it before the weekend started, just how important this race was, right? I thought this was the most important. All of it. My friends all weekend, ‘We’re getting 60 this weekend.’

Denny Hamlin said after Las Vegas race (On3.com).

Considering all the factors that happened on and off the track, he sees it as the bets win of his racing career. The factors such as having his family backing, winning it for his ill dad, securing his maiden Championship-4 entry in the Next-Gen era, securing 6th win of the season and coming out of nowhere to when on Sunday makes it an emotional weekend.

Yeah, I mean, I guess we could. I don’t know. All of it. Just putting all the factors, I can’t imagine there’s a win bigger for me than this one. With the family, with the significance of it, now being back on top for most wins in the season, punching the ticket to the 4, all of it. The fashion in which the last 10 laps played out. All of the above is why I think this means the most.

I can’t believe, I can’t process, I don’t know what happened. It’s all a blur. That was one of the very few moments in which I did not think. That entire last 10 laps, I did not think whatsoever, I just did.

He took the decision to approach racing differently, running lanes he usually doesn’t run at the final restart of the race. The veteran also admitted that he didn’t expect to secure the race win in the situation, despite having a strong car.

I said, ‘Alright, this is what I need to do to win this race. I’m gonna run this line, I’m gonna approach it differently, I’m gonna hold the cast down.’ My car was just phenomenal. I just couldn’t believe that we were able to make the moves that we were to win that race.
