The NASCAR Cup Series race at Gateway last Sunday witnessed another Denny Hamlin masterclass, as the Joe Gibbs Racing won his fifth win of the season. At the same time, Kyle Larson, who is supposed the most dominate racer on the garage, was having a wild duel with Ryan Blaney and finishing outside the top-10.

The Hendrick Motorsports No:5 Chevy of Kyle Larson, towards the end of stage two tried to run deep in turn three but made a misjudgment and made contact with the No:12 Ford of Ryan Blaney. Fortunately, the Team Penske racer was able to save his car from a wreck, but it sure killed his momentum and was furious over it afterwards.

Blaney called out the 2021 Cup champion for the incident and warned him about consequences in the future. Many in the racing community called out the HMS driver for his mistakes, but comparing to the rest Larson is getting limited criticism. According to JGR veteran Denny Hamlin, this is due to large fandom the racer has.

Most of the fanbase likes him. You’re going to stick up for your guy, right?

Denny Hamlin said on Dale Jr. Download podcast.

Furthermore, the veteran declared that he doesn’t understand why Kyle Larson is making such a significant mistake. He pointed out that the Chevy drivers is making a lot of mistakes, owing to misjudgement. Though none of the mistakes are intentional, he deserves the criticism to a certain extent.

I don’t know the answer to that. I agree, some criticism is deserved. He’s misjudging a lot. I guess you know in the back of your mind that surely it’s not intentional, so you give them a pass.

Denny Hamlin asserted.

Denny Hamlin explained what went wrong for Kyle Larson in the Ryan Blaney incident

In the same podcast, Hamlin tried to explain how Kyle Larson got himself involved in the incident. He pointed out that just like Larson said, the Chevy was attempting to make a move he made it stick the lap before, where he made the No:12 tight on the corner.

He goes in hard, doesn’t he? … He clearly misjudged it. You could see what he was trying to do because he did it the lap before. He went from the bottom to the top and what he’s trying to do is get his right front fender right on the door of the 12 into the corner, so it forces the 12 to lift because he gets a tight moment on corner exit. Now, the 5 can maintain side-by-side with him down the straightaway.

Denny Hamlin said.

He failed to pull of the move, something that has been happening more often than ever, and it cost Blaney big time. Hamlin pointed out that Larson misjudged by almost eight feet while trying ramming air to Blaney’s left side door, which was too much.

All he’s trying to do is go up there and slow the 12 down by ramming air to his left side door. He misjudged it by like eight feet. I mean, it was a lot. It’s a mistake. We’ve seen some Larson mistakes here lately.

Denny Hamlin added.

The comments from Hamlin proves, the HMS driver made a mistake un intentionally and the criticism he is getting is well deserved. The veteran has to clean up his racing, and produce solid runs in the coming week to remain as favorite to win the remaining races of the season.
