The 2024 NASCAR season saw teams going head-to-head with the series owners demanding a better charter deal for the 2025-2031 cycle. Other than Front Row Motorsports and 23XI Racing, all other teams signed the take it or leave it offer given to them ahead of the playoff race at Atlanta. They cited the lack of fairness in the deal for the decision.

FRM and 23XI Racing being the teams eager to expand their operations, the fans were surprised and curious about where things would go as the end of their current charter deal approaches. 23XI made the first move that proved they no plan to stop racing, as they give their star driver Bubba Wallace a multi-year contract extension.

At Bristol, team co-owner Denny Hamlin was asked about how the extension of Bubba Wallace should be looked into with the context of the charter drama. He pointed out that it is the proof that the Toyota team wants to race next-year and is sticking to that plan despite the distant possibility of not having a charter beyond January 1, 2025.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. explains why 23XI Racing is fighting NASCAR

The NASCAR team community alongside the teams is surprised with how 23XI and FRM is playing a dangerous game with very limited leverage on their side. The fact that the bog-teams of the sport already signed the deal puts the teams in a tough spot as well.

Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. talked about why 23XI is fighting NASCAR. He pointed out that Michael Jordan’s team feels there wont a growth potential for the team unless NASCAR makes it valuable and they are demanding a deal that make sense for them.

So 23XI believes that, but they can’t get that growth potential unless NASCAR creates that value for them in this new agreement. That’s why they’re fighting because that model makes sense to them.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

23XI giving Bubba Wallace a contract extension sends a clear statement that they are ready to fight to stay in the sport on their own terms. It will be interesting to see how the charter wars will turn out and how it is going to affect the sport as a whole.
