The whole NASCAR community was heartbroken over the Denny Hamlin family tragedy during the off season. Just weeks after charter lawsuit settlement and Greg Biffle plane crash, Dennis Hamlin lost his life in a tragic housefire. His wife Mary Lou Hamlin was severely injured and is still in the hospital recovering.
Joe Gibbs Racing veteran driver Denny Hamlin is beyond disappointed with the death and his mother being in the hospital. When asked about his feelings about his father, who was the biggest supporter of the veteran racer, Hamlin admitted that he is in an okay state of mind.
I’m OK, as to be expected.
Denny Hamlin told Fox Sports.
He was then asked about the recovery of his mother, who spend years supporting both Dennis and Denny Hamlin. He pointed out that she is getting batter, but is still having tough days due to the injury. The emotional toll of losing her husband is tough for he as well.
She has good days, bad days, but is getting better.
Denny Hamlin added.
Following the tragedy, Denny Hamlin thought about his future and maybe siting out the 2026 season. When asked about it, he pointed out that he decided to continue racing, as he owes it to the Joe Gibbs family that has been supporting him throughout his career.
I’ve considered all options. I made a promise to Joe and the Gibbs family.
Denny Hamlin asserted.
Denny Hamlin insists racing in 2026 isn’t difficult for him
In the same conversation the 23XI Racing co-owner was asked how difficult the racing return is going to be for him, after the tragedy. He pointed out that he doesn’t expect to to be difficult, and asserted out that once he gets the hang racing back, everything will be good.

I don’t think [it will be difficult]. I think once I get in the swing of it, it’ll actually be good to get back to it. I just haven’t locked in for the season, necessarily, quite yet.
Denny Hamlin said.
The veteran has been desperately wanting to win a championship for his father for decades and the 2025 season was a prime example of it. He was the front runner to win, but a mistake in the last lap cost him the championship. But he was able to secure the 60th Cup win of his career and dedicate it to his father, who was ill that time.
The 2026 season will give the JGR racer the opportunity to honor his father with a championship win under the new format. The sport is set to go back to the original Chase system and with Hamlin being one of the most consistent drivers in the garage gives him a clear shot.
