The NASCAR off-season after the disappointing 2025 championship loss was a nightmare for the Denny Hamlin household. Days after Christmas, the Joe Gibbs Racing veterans father Dennis Hamlin was killed in a tragic housefire.

He was already struggling with sickness and Hamlin did everything he could to win a championship for his father in 2025, but failed. Recently the late Hamlin’s widow Mary Lou Hamlin talked about the tragedy and admitted that pulling her husband of 50+ from the fire was the saddest moment of her life.

Dec. 28 was one of the saddest days of my life. It was the last time I saw my husband of 52 years, when I pulled him out of our burning home.

Mary Lou Hamlin said in a recent interview.

One of the major disappointments during the tragedy was the fact that when the fire force made it to the burning house, the trucks had no water to put out the flames and they had to let the whole house burn down. It was because of the county budget constraints that is negatively affecting the emergency services and Mary Lou has urged the leaders to take a stand.

I didn’t understand at the time that the fire trucks were there but not the water. There was no water to put out my house. I am advocating for funding to be included in this year’s budget. Training on emergency response, additional equipment, staffing. … Just a few of the things needed.

Mary Lou Hamlin added via Luke Tucker of WBTV.

Denny Hamlin’s sister Lisa Chapman also talked about the situation to the media. She pointed out that it is really a worse feeling that everyone pull-up to the house only to see it burning down because they are helpless.

There’s nothing worse than pulling up to the house on fire and seeing everybody standing in the road. … No water being thrown on the fire.

Lisa Chapman asserted.

Denny Hamlin recalled the tragic housefire

Ahead of the 2026 Daytona 500, Denny Hamlin talked about what he went through during the announcement. He recalled how his sister called him about the incident and how his mother was getting his father out of the house, while he was racing to make it to the house. Seeing his father lifeless in the hospital was one of the saddest moments for him.

I got a call from my sister that said the parents’ house is on fire, the whole house is gone. My mom took him from the bedroom to outside in the front yard. I was just driving so fast to try to get there and they said they had already been taken to the hospital. What made it real was seeing my dad. I saw him lying there after he had passed, I just knew that it was real in that moment.

Denny Hamlin said.

The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran went on emotional roller coaster ahead of the 2026 season, with the death of father, a shoulder injury and the ugly drama over the charter lawsuit. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout Hamlin this season and if he can win the championship to honor his late father.
