One of the major topics of discussion among the veterans of the sport has been the lack of racing etiquette shown by the upcoming stock car racing generation. The Martinsville Xfinity Series race from this Saturday proves things are getting bad and the racing community needs to step up to put an end to it.
The race featured over 14 cautions, and a red flag, with the most egregious incident occurring in the last lap. Austin Hill won the race, after Sammy Smith wrecked Tyler Gray on the last corner coming up from multiple positions down in his desperation for securing a race win. Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin was one of the many that didn’t hold back, while criticizing the racers.
Via his podcast Actions Detrimental, Hamlin who won the Cup race on Sunday in a respectable race, shared his thoughts on the drivers. He made multiple critical comments on X about the race and doubled down on it via his podcast, asserting that it was a horrible event. His emotional outburst came from the perspective of a fan and a car owner.
I pretty much said in some tweets what I thought about it, and that it was horrible. I can only speak to what I am as a fan, I can speak to what I am as a car owner, and I can tell you I’m not impressed.
Denny Hamlin said via Actions Detrimental.
The veteran then went onto to name three drivers who he believes raced like a**holes. He named Austin Hill, Sam Mayer and Sammy Smith in the list. He then shared how he would have responded when he was at the race booth calling the race and also highlighted how impressive veteran racer Parker Kligerman was in calling the race as it is for CW.
Austin Hill, Sam Mayer, Sammy Smith, all drove like a**holes. It’s my job to be as subjective as I am as I can be on this show. I said, ‘Good thing I’m not in the booth, or I’d be fired for calling these guys out.’ I think Parker Kligerman did a good job to be as fair as he could, but yet as truthful as he could.

Denny Hamlin has a wild solution for the issue
Further talking about the situation and how it needs to avoided, Hamlin pointed out that there are only few things that can be done to solve the issue. The first thing he believe that needs to be done is public shaming of the drivers, though he isn’t a big fan of it.

I believe in my heart of hearts there’s only a few things you can do to change this. It’s sad to say, but I think public shaming is maybe some of it. That’s not impressive to me.
Denny Hamlin said.
He then gives his perspective as a team owner as a Cup Series driver and highlighted that he will definitely look down on drivers that won races by wiping out some other driver. He believes this proves that particular driver is immature.
I own some cars in the Cup Series and if you think I’m ever gonna look at you just because you wiped a guy out and won, no. That doesn’t impress me at all. It just shows me immaturity.
Denny Hamlin added.
The comment from Hamlin shows how significant the situation is and how it is important for the veterans of the sport speak up against the poor racing attitude of some young drivers. It would be interesting to see how NASCAR is going to address the serious situation and if they are going to penalize the drivers for their mistakes.
