Joe Gibbs Racing garage wasn’t in a good mood coming into the Throwback weekend race at Darlington Raceway on Sunday after a poor qualification. All four of their drivers started the race outside the top-15. But the teams were able to make the proper changes overnight and execute during the race to leave the track with race win trophy.
Veteran Denny Hamlin won the race, defeating his teammate Christopher Bell and William Byron, who dominated the first two stages of the race. But the duo weren’t the most disappointed figures in the garage, as that title belongs to Team Penske Racing’s Ryan Blaney, who was leading the race before a caution after Kyle Larson spun out caused a series of drama.
The No:5 Chevy of Larson checked up on Bubba Wallace suddenly, causing a contact and yellow flag, sending the race to final restart. The No:12 team didn’t have the best pit stop, while Hamlin’s crew executed with perfection, which decided the race result. Post race the three times Daytona 500 winner thanked his crew and jokingly credited Larson for him win as well.
There’s two people I really love right now: my pit crew and Kyle Larson. Had a little assist there, so thank you.

He then went to give his crew, who were once heavily criticized for lacking, for stepping up for him a second week in row earning him the win. Hamlin in the same interview also give a shout out to his sponsor Sport Clips, who supported him.
Man, the pit crew just did an amazing job. They won it last week. They won it this week. It’s all about them. Thanks Sport Clips. They have such a big deal here in Darlington, South Carolina … We’ll see you at Victory Lane.

Denny Hamlin responds to Carl Edwards trying make him do a backflip
The No:11 Toyota Hamlin got into the victory lane the 56th time in his career was honoring his close friend and ex-Joe Gibbs Racing driver Carl Edwards as part of the throwback weekend. The Hall of Famer was in attendance for the race.

Ahead of the race, when asked about Hamlin potentially winning the event, Carl Edwards admitted that he wants to see Hamlin doing backflip from the car. It was the iconic post-win celebration of the Edwards, and it would have been special if the 23XI co-owner had done it.
Hamlin was asked about doing the backflip in his post-race interview. The 44-year-old was quick to pass the offer and he then commented that Edwards is welcome to do the backflip from his car instead, turning the tables on his ex-teammate.
I’ll pass. If Carl is here, he’s more than welcome to jump off the car.
Denny Hamlin said.
All in all, it was a solid day on the track for Hamlin and his crew lead by new crew chief Chris Gayle. Their strategy of running more laps with the old tier paid off big-time and gave them the much-needed fresh tier advantage late in the race. Hamlin will be oping the combination of luck and execution will continue for him in the remaining races of the season.
