Coming into the opening race of the 2025 playoff R-12 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Joe Gibbs Racing drivers were expected to dominate and give their rivals a nightmare. Instead, they were busy with making each other’s race bad, resulting in Denny Hamlin dumping Ty Gibbs, who is a co-owner of the team.

Midway through the race, the Joe Gibbs Racing trio of Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs found themselves racing against each other outside the top 10. The No:54 Toyota was making aggressive defensive move against his teammates, when he should have given them, some space considering the two are in the title chase and he isn’t.

But he decided to play the frustrating game, infuriating Denny Hamlin, who after a couple of warning bumps, dumped his young teammate and made the path clear to himself as well as Bell. The latter went on to finish the race at P6, while Hamlin scored P12.  Ty Gibbs had to settle with a disappointing P35 finish, the second worst finisher of the day.

After the race, Denny Hamlin who was visibly upset with the grandson of his boss Joe Gibbs, reminded the 2021 Xfinity Series champion that they should have been gives some respect in the instance. He asked him to consider the fact that he alongside Chase Briscoe and Bell is fighting to secure the Gibbs family a championship, they have been chasing since 2019.

We made contact into [Turn] 1 — it was like a fourth or fifth time we made contact, but eventually he ended up getting spun…Obviously us, the 20 [of Bell], the 19 [of Briscoe] are all trying to win a championship for their family. So, it’s crazy unfortunate why we’re racing the way we are.

They already have a pre-exiting relation as the youngster made his Cup debut with Hamlin’s 23XI Racing as the temporary replacement of Kurt Busch, after a career ending injury. Since his debut the three times Daytona 500 champion worked on helping the ex-Xfinity Series champion better. The veteran pointed out that Gibbs has more to learn about understanding down and distance.

I definitely have more dialogue with him than any of the other teammates that I have. But he’s just got so much to learn and certainly got a very high ceiling of talent. Just understanding down and distance seems to be the struggle.

In the same conversation, the veteran driver explained how they are going settle the beef between them in the next team meeting on Monday. He is expecting the team management and Joe Gibbs to step up and sort out everything.

The 54 got back clear of me and the 20, and we ran him right back down, and then just couldn’t get any space to race once we were trying to pass. I don’t know what the whole formula is, but I’m sure Joe and those guys will figure it out.

The JGR team has a big task in their hand, as they have to explain to Ty Gibbs that the big picture is the team winning the title and him being a team player. But at the same time, they have to make sure they are giving the youngster a fair chance to end his winless streak in the top-tier that has been haunting him since his debut.
