The 2024 NASCAR season has been emotional roller coaster for Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin. With his three impressive race wins early in the season, Hamlin established himself as championship favourite. But as the season progressed the No:11 teams’ pace and form started to plumet.
Denny Hamlin and co had to grind their way into the R-8, and with coming into this weekend’s Martinsville cutoff race, he was in a must-win situation, with a small chance of pointing his way into the finale. But his dreams of a productive weekend were shattered early, after he wrecked himself in the practice session.

The TRD veteran was heartbroken following the incident and didn’t hessite to show his frustration. He was seen slamming his helmet hard on his No:11 Toyota Camry, with significant damage on it’s rear. What makes the situation much worse for Hamlin, is the fact that he was the fastest in the practice sessions.

The No:11 team was forced to work on the back-up car, as the primary car was damaged beyond fixing. Hence, he will now have to start way back at the grid on Sunday, while his teammate Martin Truex Jr. will start the race on the pole. If the incident didn’t have happened, the pole would most probably have been his to take.
Denny Hamlin’s crew chief explained what caused the crash
In his post-race interview the No:11 team crew chief Chris Gabehart what went wrong for them and what caused the crash. He pointed out that a big clump of rubber got in between the throttle body shaft and caused the crash. Gabehart is perplexed by it, as its very rare for such a situation to happen.

The way it happened, exactly, was a big clump of rubber got in between the throttle body shaft and it wouldn’t let the pedal return to 0 percent. It was very very rare because of where that’s at, it’s really hard for the rubber to even get there in the first place, but it did.
Denny Hamlin said.
The No:11 team isn’t losing any hope and determined to bounce back. They are intensely working on the backup car to make it race ready and is hoping that they can showcase the same speed they had during the practice session.
