The 2025 NASCAR cup season started with The Clash at the Bowman Gray Stadium on Sunday. Madhouse lived up to its name as the whole race featured some wild crashes and incidents, while Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott won the event with leading a record 171 laps, beating the Ryan Blaney, who gave a tough fight.
One of the wildest incidents of the week came in the Last Chace Qualifying, that involved youngsters Ty Gibbs and Justin Haley. The No:54 Toyota of Gibbs went airborne when he tagged Haley in retaliation, owing to a previous clash on the track. His JGR teammate Denny Hamlin was unimpressed with the actions of the young driver.
Further talking about the drama, Denny Hamlin asserted that Gibbs should have taken a different way to get back at Haley and he didn’t like how the ex-Xfinity champion approached the situation. He pointed out that the car went on air because the tire rolled over each other when they made contact, and it looked worse than it actually was.
Denny Hamlin warns Ty Gibbs amidst the expectations on his shoulders
In the same conversation Hamlin pointed out that NASCAR isn’t going to love Gibbs’ actions as he has the pressure on his shoulders to end his race winning streak and make his way into the Cup playoffs. He wants Gibbs to figure things out and not to let things get to him.
The comment from Hamlin shows how much he disliked the actions from his teammate and how he wanted Gibbs to perform on the level that is expected of him. It would be interesting to see how the star driver is going to perform this season, with the pressure of expectations on his shoulders.
