Denny Hamlin spills the beans on why Martin Truex Jr. is retirement despite being “competitive”

Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Martin Truex Jr. ahead of the Iowa Corn 350 announced that he will retire from full-time racing at the end of the 2024 season. The 2017 Cup champion made the decision as he reckons it’s time for him to do something different that what he has been doing over two decades ad take his life slow.
Martin Truex Jr.’s JGR teammate Denny Hamlin has discussed the announcement vis his podcast Action Detrimental. He asserted that the No:19 Toyota driver is still competitive for the top tier but has decided to retire because he wanted to leave the sport when he is at the top and wants more time to himself.

You always wondered when would that moment come with Martin. I think that he’s competitive enough, he wants to leave on top, and from what I gathered from that press conference he just wants more time.Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.
He went on to point out that being a Cup series driver comes with a lot of commitments and one of which is time it takes to prepare to remain in top. Hamlin pointed out that his teammate is tiered of leaving according to someone else’s schedule and now wants to make his own schedule.
And the time that it takes to be competitive at the Cup level, it takes a lot of commitment and a lot of time. For the last 20-some years, he’s had to live by a schedule that somebody else made for him and now wants to make his own schedule.Denny Hamlin added.
Denny Hamlin highlights the independent nature of Martin Truex Jr.
Unlike many of the top drivers in the NASCAR Cup grid, Martin Truex Jr, lives a very private life. His life off the track is often not discussed in the media as he is independent enough to keep everything to himself while he is at the racetrack or back home.

He’s at an age where he just wants to go do his own thing. He’s always been a very independent person. You don’t read much off-track news from Martin Truex. That’s just the way that he is and the way he carries himself. But you never questioned his God-given talent.Denny Hamlin said.
Martin Truex Jr. and Hamlin would be hoping to have an impressive year together in 2024, which would be their last season together. The latter can also give the former opportunities to race again in the Cup series as he co-owns 23XI Racing.
