The Truck Series race in Miami was full of drama. The rivalry between Matt Mills and Conner Jones had been boiling over for the 2024 season and saw its biggest flashpoint yet. This resulted in the 18-year-old knocking out the No.42 car, which led to a burst of flames erupting from the Chevy. Consequently, the subsequent actions led to the hospitalization of Mills for further evaluation of his health.
Matt Mills is competing in his first full season of the Truck Series in NASCAR after taking a break from competing in the Xfinity Series. However, in his current campaign, he developed up a rivalry with Conner Jones, which reached a boiling point at the race in Miami. On lap 76, the No.66 driver lunged up the inside of the NM driver and bumped the Chevy’s rear, which unsettled the car and went on a course to crash with the outside wall.
This subsequently led to a burst of inferno coming out of the No. 42 Chevy. This took the 27-year-old by a shock, who was able to get out of the car independently, but was soon sent to a nearby hospital for further checkups.
On the other hand, Jones was full of frustration and was heard ranting on the radio after the crash. This helped stewards gain evidence against his case, and issued him a two-lap penalty for his prior actions.
Conner Jones reflected on his incident with Matt Mills
With Jones’ emotions taking over while racing at blazing speeds, people reckoned his actions to be immature. Furthermore, his young age was dragged up by people, who blamed the teenager for the incident.

However, the ThorSport Racing driver understood the seriousness of the issue and shared an apology on social media. He explained that his actions were the consequence of his frustration that had been piling over, but admitted that his behavior was unsportsmanlike on the tarmac.
have not yet had the chance to personally apologize to Matt for the incident that took place during today’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but I intend to do so. Matt and I have encountered several on-track incidents this season, and I let my frustration get the best of me. I underestimated the impact my actions would have on Matt, and I deeply regret the consequences that followed. I would like to extend my sincerest apologies to Matt, Niece Motorsports, NASCAR, and my entire ThorSport Racing team for my unsportsmanlike behavior. My thoughts are with Matt, during this time after hearing that he been taken to the hospital for further evaluation following the contact on the racetrack.
Conner Jones wrote on X.
With Jones owing up to his mistake, Mills is anticipated to forgive his rival. On the other hand, this crash did not have a major affect in the complications of the playoffs in the Truck Series side of things. Both drivers were no longer in contention for the championship ever since the playoffs started and their crash did not take up any other driver in the crossfire.
